At times, the main character is good and he’ll act determined he’s gonna kill something or kill whatever needs to be done and then he’ll try and take the high ground to force his morals onto other people which just reeks of a male savior complex. “Oh my the strong, independent, black lady needs saving by the white guy.”

The dog’s voice drives me to want to stab my eardrums

The narrators voice for the dog when it whines almost made me quit listening it’s so bad. I hope they fix that for the second book. Otherwise the story isn’t bad.

Good book but Ean ruins it.

You know a book is bad when you root against a main character. Ean drags this book down from an exciting tale of mysteries and magic into a big of selfishness and self pity. I had to stop listening several times because Ean is such a whiny idiot. My 4 year old whines less than him. Literally every single other character is more interesting which makes it even harder to listen to his constant BS. Part way through the book I started hoping that the enemies would win, kill him, and maybe his next incarnation wouldn't be so freaking stupid. I do understand what the author is trying to achieve but two full books of him has killed whatever hope there could have been for this character. In a 30-45 minute chapter there is probably 3-5 minutes of useful story progression and 40 minutes of him being an idiot.

Bottom line, the book is good just watch tv and let this play softly in the background when it comes to the Ean chapters.

Hate the main character

Not spoiling anything but she continually goes from being semi-intelligent and interesting to being the dumbest fucking idiot around. I love the author, and his other books but dear god I really started rooting for the bad guys to kill her. The story overall is good because David Wong is a great writer. Maybe it's the sign of a good writer that you can get enraged and the sheer stupidity of his characters, or maybe it's that she does things no sane person would.

I'm confused can he just not say sloth?

The story is decent enough, my biggest complaint is every time he said sloth he pronounced it "slowth." Maybe I missed something but it's pretty annoying when you hear it.

Other than that the story is pretty good, albeit the authors continue to try and over sexualize everything. "It was pissing rain" seriously? There are such better words in the English language and yet they go for the cheap ones that invoke sexuality for no reason.
