The connections over the lifetimes
Revisado: 09-22-24
The characters are richly drawn and authentic. The scenery of so many regions were an added bonus to the people. The way the families of the departed helped in Patch’s quest was seamless and touching. Beautifully written with a strong female protagonist.

Shocking news reaches them—an old friend has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing. The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. As they encounter drug dealers, art forgers, and online fraudsters—as well as heartache close to home—Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim have no idea whom to trust.

I found this fourth book deeper and more layered.
Revisado: 01-15-24
Although I have enjoyed all 4 of these Oman books, I found this deeper and more layered. The gradual familiarity with the wonderful characters allowed for some meaningful depth and caring. I enjoyed listening to Fiona Shaw!

Many obstacles and love
Revisado: 11-13-22
A story with many characters richly described, often by means of dialogue. Kudos to the narrator who did a wonderful job imagining each character. Amidst the challenges there was humor. Having worked with teenagers, I admit laughing out loud at some of the “attitude”. However some of the pain experienced reminded me that “ hurt people hurt people”. While the place and its descriptions were secondary, I appreciated the dryness and history of a unique part of the country. Well done.

Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

I couldn’t stop listening!
Revisado: 10-01-22
Historical fiction with a touch of magical realism to make it even more interesting. Well drawn characters and so many of them! The narration was so believable that I don’t think reading it would have been as enjoyable. Freedom, racism, grief, and the politics of rebellion are explored in riveting language and dialogue.

Suspenseful with strong characters and descriptions.
Revisado: 03-31-22
Hard to put down! Love the descriptions of London and Wales and surrounding countryside. Many surprises and suspenseful twists and turns. Strong character development. My second Audible book by the author. Looking forward to more. Narrator enhanced the story.
