Good story, challenging as audio book
Revisado: 10-30-22
Masterful continuation of the detectives' story line and usual superb narration by R. Glenister, but ...
The plot is mainly presented through on-line text messaging with all its back-and-forth, tags and usernames. Easy to read, difficult to narrate, hard to listen to, challenging to follow.
Enjoy, but take notes!

From birthdays to birth rates to how we perceive the passing of time, mathematical patterns shape our lives. But for those of us who left math behind in high school, the numbers and figures hurled at us as we go about our days can sometimes leave us scratching our heads, feeling as if we're fumbling through a mathematical minefield.

The author's own easygoing narrative presents some of the major mathematical and statistical topics of our time as storytelling. Very easy to follow as an audiobook, without reference to printed graphs or equations. Listen carefully and you'll be more skeptical of a lot you see in both the mainstream and social media.

Historia
In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

Slow paced. Some charm. Disappointing finale.
Revisado: 01-09-19
My introduction to the "Beekeeper" series starring Sherlock Holmes (in his 50's), and his very young protegee, Mary Russell (age 18) -- though she talked more like a 35-year-old, after reading many glowing reviews. Set in the period during and just after WW I, the author does a good job with the modes and customs of the time. I liked the dialogue between "Holmes" and "Russell", which seemed consistent with the way Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the original Sherlock Holmes series. The mysteries were mildly engaging, but the book as a whole was too slow-paced, with no actual case to be solved until maybe 60 pages in. The denouement was also disappointing; finding out who the "bad guy" was, and (her) motive. Plus the excruciatingly drawn out scene of the final confrontation where one of the protagonists invariably has to get hurt in order to make the story exciting. I am not interested in reading the rest of this series.
To her credit, Jenny Sterlin did a creditable job of narration, including a clear discrimination between the voices of Mary and Sherlock.

Superstar comedian and Hollywood box-office star Kevin Hart turns his immense talent to the written word by writing some words. Some of those words include: the, a, for, above, and even even. Put them together and you have the funniest, most heartfelt, and most inspirational memoir on survival, success, and the importance of believing in yourself since Old Yeller.

Enjoyable and inspirational.
Revisado: 03-11-18
If you are not offended by a barrage of profanities (yes, every few words), there is a lot to like about Kevin Hart's autobiographical "Life Lessons". After a very difficult childhood with an insane, drug using father and an obsessive, super-disciplinary mother, Kevin Hart overcame many setbacks, adversities, and a terrible marriage to achieve top of the line success as a stand-up comedian by his early thirties. He is obviously a highly intelligent, articulate and super-motivated person with a magnetic drive to persevere in the face of disappointments that would fell most people. I found the book had many excellent observations about the human character and how to survive in a difficult world. It had some hilarious moments though was basically a serious book. I find his advice excellent and relevant if you are a 20 or 30 year old facing life decisions. Not as relevant if you are a 70-year old looking back on what life dealt you and not feeling you have the time to forge ahead like he did and does.

Slow start but a great wrap-up.
Revisado: 02-03-18
I was going to give this book 3 stars because the early part and middle were kind of draggy, but then the pace and suspense picked up when the screen cutter mystery was finally solved. The resolution of the Whitney Vance story was also handled masterfully, as Michael Connelly is an expert writer and storyteller who knows his craft. I especially liked the ending where Vibiana Veracruz got star recognition as an artist. Her public sculpture sounds amazing, and maybe someone will actually do it. The reader, Titus Welliver, always does a great job of representing the characters. Love his narration.

I had no problem understanding all of the stories. I have studied French a long time but wanted to refresh my oral comprehension prior to another visit to France in a few weeks. This book was good for that. The narrator spoke clearly and not too fast. His English wasn't perfect but that's not important. I would recommend this book.

Enjoyable story and writing style. A few questions
Revisado: 02-25-17
As usual, Deborah Crombie delivered another entertaining tale of the lives of Gemma James and Duncan Kincaid -- two very likeable characters. I enjoy the other characters as well, their children Kit and Toby, and in this case, Betty and little Charlotte. The story was engaging and the narration of the audiobook was excellent. I especially liked the prelude to and the wedding scene... very touching. As for the mystery, the resolution was not too credible as I do not believe the victims would have put themselves at risk in the way they would have had to to meet their respective fates. The villain was a very bad person indeed and I think they would have been smart enough to perceive the danger and get law enforcement involved right away.

Earth evolves. From first atom to molecule, mineral to magma, granite crust to single cell to verdant living landscape, ours is a planet constantly in flux. In this radical new approach to Earth’s biography, senior Carnegie Institution researcher and national best-selling author Robert M. Hazen reveals how the co-evolution of the geosphere and biosphere - of rocks and living matter - has shaped our planet into the only one of its kind in the Solar System, if not the entire cosmos.

So packed with info, also bought the physical book
Revisado: 08-16-14
I can’t say enough good things about The Story of Earth. Even though I have a doctorate in biological science from decades ago, I found literally hundreds of ideas and facts I was totally unaware of. For example, I had no idea the moon was formed by “the Big Thwack” with proto-earth of a very early planet called “Thea”, nor that the weathering of rock is a far bigger sequesterer of carbon dioxide than are all plants on earth. Nor that there is now a real debate about an abiogenic origin of the earth’s petroleum resources. The author does a fantastic job of describing how the evolution of life on earth – going back billions of years, far earlier than the pre-Cambrian – is totally bound up with the evolution of minerals and geology of the planet. Us short-lived humans are actually lucky we are not around long enough to experience most of the repeated cataclysms (asteroid impacts, massive volcanic explosions, continental drift) that rock this planet from the distant past to the distant future. Absolutely fascinating book.
The reader's style was a bit sing-songy and repetitive (inducing drowsiness because of the technical material). He also made a few verbal typos, not caught by the editor.

A great, dark read, appropriate reader too.
Revisado: 05-01-14
This was my first Harry Dolan read, and I was way impressed, by the plot, the writing, and the reader. All the characters seemed intelligent (included the deranged ones), which made you care about what they did and what happened to them. Another reviewer said he thought Michael Kramer was a monotonous-sounding reader, but I thought his voice and rendition were an excellent fit to the creepy darkness of this story, the only caution being he sounds like an older man than the protagonist, David Malone. The Last Dead Girl describes an intricate puzzle, keeping you guessing (and listening) until the last piece has fallen into place. Masterful.
