Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

All the complexity
Revisado: 09-17-23
James McBride has the voice, the analysis, the acute vision of a master. His books hurt and enchant.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Not the usual horrible recovery tale
Revisado: 09-02-18
Ms Westover surpasses others who have escaped from messianic Mormon leaders in her minute recounting of many of her experiences of childhood and youth, her self-examination of the soul killing values of her father’s mad beliefs, which many times almost caused her to succumb to self hatred, and the process of many years of self education and study by which she freed. Worth study in the age of group think now upon us.

Historia
Dr. Siri Paiboun, the ex-national coroner of Laos, may have more experience dissecting bodies than making art, but when he manages to smuggle a fancy movie camera into the country he devises a plan to shoot a Lao adaptation of War and Peace. The only problem? The Ministry of Culture must approve the script first. That and he can't figure out how to turn on the camera. Meanwhile, the skeleton of a woman has appeared under the Anusawari Arch in the middle of the night. Siri assists his friend, the newly promoted Senior Police Inspector Phosy Vongvichai, with the ensuing investigation.

One of the best for Mr Cotterill

An exciting chapter in what one always hopes will be an ongoing adventure. The social critique is mordant- see E Warren End Corruption 🙏
