Absolutely outstanding

Having at 18 pained my way through the assignment of reading what I then took to be a much too long book laboriously detailing more than anyone could ever want to know about whales and whaling I was made curious at age 85 to see what could could have made this damned leviathan of a book one of the best audio interpretations of the year. What was there that even one of our best Shakespearean actors could make worth listening to for 24 hours.
Suffice it to say that at the end I joined the audio engineer who admitted in an Afterword interview to have broken down in tears and sobbing on the night before recording this great interpreter’s reading of the last chapter. No kidding.

P D James, she of the ambivalent index gender, is now so well known that grandly to praise her is just the silliest redundancy. Here she is wonderfully backgrounding some of her famous characters. Great stuff. What makes this one irresistible is the magnificent performance of Penelope Dellaporta, with the single exception of Alison Larkin the absolute best interpreter of first-rate novels in recording history. Yes, I am that old.

Best Buy of Best Performance of Austen

Alison Larkin is for very good reason the American voice of the Jane Austen Society. As a Janeian of 50-years standing who has seen ALL of the film and television productions of Miss Austen’s novels, and heard almost all of the myriad recordings over many years, I can assure you that this is not only the best over-all performance but far and away the best as to interpretation, accents, pacing, and contrasting voices. Larkin is simply amazing. And what a buy!
