Ok story made subpar by poor narration
Revisado: 04-27-21
I loved the first three books in this series. I was hungry for more, so I decided to try these as well. The story just isn't as engaging, and that's made even worse by the multiple narrators, some of which are downright bad, especially the narrator for Lysander.

Way too juvenile, lots of odd holes in the story.
Revisado: 10-27-20
Perhaps the main problem is that I'm a mid-30's male who picked up what is obviously (once i read it) a book meant for teenage girls.
the "worldbuilding" and details in the beginning left me with a ton of questions... it was like she was just trying to get through the tricky part where stuff actually happens so she could dwell on the drama and feelings for the rest of the book.
The narrator tried to make it sound like she was about to cry for 80% of the book. That, combined with the general nature of the story just left me cringing too often.
I wont judge it too harshly because it was generally enjoyable, but just a warning to non-12 year old girls, this is probably not the book you are looking for.

Historia
Eva, eighteen, and Nell, seventeen, are sisters, adolescents on the threshold of womanhood - and for them anything should be possible. But even as Eva prepares for an audition with the San Francisco Ballet and Nell dreams of her first semester at Harvard, their lives are turned upside down and their dreams are pushed into the shadows. In a nation suddenly without electricity or communication, Eva is compelled to dance alone to the music of memory, and Nell's education consists of reading the encyclopedia, devouring knowledge as if it were her last meal.

Beware! Poor audio quality! Decent book though!
Revisado: 03-04-13
First things first... this book is hard to listen to. The narrator is fine, I enjoyed the way she read it. But just the recording itself sounds bad, like low bit-rate. I tried downloading a higher quality version, no improvement. Its tiresome on the ears and actually can be hard to understand. Its the worst I've found on audible so far.
Now for the story: It really is a good book, I'd give the book itself a solid 4 stars. Its short, its surprising, its powerful, but leaves you wanting more.
I wont dive into detail because other reviews do that just fine. Its a well written book with an interesting little story. One of the more memorable in the genre, even though it was very short, and the audio quality was poor.
Get this book the recording it deserves!

The New York Times best-selling novel from Garth Stein - a heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope - a captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life...as only a dog could tell it.

Unique and entertaining!
Revisado: 09-18-12
I started out skeptical, because the premise and layout really isn't my cup of tea, a self-aware dog learning life's lessons through the lens of his owners racecar driving career (ive never cared about the sport)
But I finished the book in two sittings on a long road trip, and ive gotta say, it was one of my favorites. I really loved it... Give it a shot, especially if you like dogs, and even if you don't care about car racing.

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. Revisado: 08-09-11
Listened to this book in about two sittings on both legs of a long road trip, and i must say, we couldn't "put it down" we were listening to it for ten minute drives to the grocery store, and whenever we had a chance... Cant wait to see if the next ones in the series are this good.
