Where has this book been my whole life? It is funny, charming, and clever. Such a funny and heartwarming story. If your heart is in Green Gables and Avonlea, you will find it also has a room in the Blue Castle.

Terrible narrator

The narrator has a monotone and robotic voice which makes the story incredibly difficult to listen to, and is so off putting it made me dislike the characters immediately. I struggled through because I realize this was not what the author intended, but sadly I fell like the poor narration sabotaged the story.

I almost returned the book at the first chapter because the narrators voice is so childlike it is off putting. It makes all the characters lines sound even more immature and silly than thy already are. But beyond that, the plot is seriously lacking. As far a being not OK… I don’t want to give away to much in case anyone still wants to waste their time on this book. But let’s just say that the treatment the villain is given in the end is not acceptable, The author tries to act like a forgiving heart allows him to be treated in a certain way, but actually he is practically rewarded for his crimes that are deserving of death, she puts forth the concept that if a member of your family commits a crime, you are allowed to hush it up. Forget the victims, they have no say in the matter. Much less the woman he has taken advantage of. I was so taken aback I thought the author was about to justify his action by saying something like “But it’s her fault, because she was asking for it”. It is not a forgiving heat, but a willful and prideful ignorance that is celebrated in the end. That is not ok by me.

I typically enjoy regency romances and Sarah Eden as an author. But this has to be one of the worst I’ve ever read. The characters were simple to the point of being insipid and dumb. There was no depth to the characters or the plot over all. Each of the main characters had suffered emotional and physical abandonment, which is something that on the surface sounds like it would bring greater meaning to the book…. But it didn’t. It was handled in a very simple and superficial way. Save your credit for a different Sarah Eden book.

If you love this type of lighthearted clean regency romance novel… then this is a book for you. The narrator makes the story sound a bit Juvenile, but if you get past that and focus on the writing, the story truly comes to life.

I really wanted to like this book. I am an Andy Weir fan. Unfortunately the main protagonist is one of the most unlikable characters I have ever read. The female lead is brash, cocky, and just rude to everyone around her for no reason. There are a few likable characters who never get the recognition they deserve or worse yet, end up apologizing to the lead who has been terrible to them the whole time. There is also lazy writing with the author relying on profanity to end a conversation instead of taking time to time to flesh out conversations and ideas. The author also gives away quite a bit of the story in the middle of the book, so by the second half you already know pretty much how it is going to get up.

This is an action adventure story about a woman in a mans world. It definitely fits into the description of a historical romance, but it is so much more!
