Historia
The lead homicide investigator in a rural town, Detective Sergeant Gemma Woodstock is deeply unnerved when a high school classmate is found strangled, her body floating in a lake. And not just any classmate, but Rosalind Ryan, whose beauty and inscrutability exerted a magnetic pull on Smithson High School, first during Rosalind's student years and then again when she returned to teach drama. As much as Rosalind's life was a mystery to Gemma when they were students together, her death presents even more of a puzzle.

When a 17-year-old boy goes missing while camping with his buddies in the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend, the case is right up PI Charlie Dodge’s alley. Charlie’s reputation for finding missing people - especially missing kids - is unparalleled. Unfortunately, trouble seems to be equally good at finding him. Charlie’s still in the thick of it when bad news arrives regarding his wife, Annie, whose early onset Alzheimer’s is causing her to slip further and further away. The timing couldn’t be worse. Thankfully, Charlie’s ride-or-die assistant, Wyrick, has his back.

The never-before-seen correspondence of John le Carré, one of the most important novelists of our generation, is collected in this beautiful volume. During his lifetime, le Carré wrote numerous letters to writers, spies, politicians, artists, actors and public figures. This collection is a treasure trove, revealing the late author's humor, generosity, and wit—a side of him many listeners have not previously seen.

Terrible narrator
Revisado: 01-18-23
Reading David Cornwell's youthful letters, the narrator sounds 200 years old. After that, he just sounds sort of dumpy and unshaven. (Michael Jayston was the perfect narrator for LeCarre's books, as good as LeCarre himself.) I couldn't get past the first couple of hours, so it will have to be the print edition for me.

Historia
It seems straightforward to Attorney Nate Shepherd: a middle-aged billionaire dies while celebrating at a wedding reception. The grief-stricken family lashes out, though, blaming the billionaire’s date for his death. When the family brings all of its power to bear, the wheels of local justice threaten to overwhelm the woman. As Nate Shepherd steps in to defend her, he tries to deflect the misplaced anger that’s directed at the woman for the tragedy. But as the investigation progresses, a tangled history unravels, including unexpected ties to Nate’s own life.

Writing tic
Revisado: 05-30-22
I'm glad other readers noticed that witnesses, regardless of background or previous speech patterns, always answer counsels' questions with the same snappy "I did," "I am," "I was." After a while, I had to fast-forward through some of the trial testimony to avoid throwing my mp3 player into the weeds. [Note to Stagg's editor: The trial takes up so much of the story that he needs to bring the courtroom writing up to the rest of the book.] Still, a good yarn, good narration, good company on a legal-thriller junkie's daily walk.

Dismal, pedantic
Revisado: 05-17-22
After enjoying the first Varg Veum book, Yours Until Death, I really wanted to like this series. But the first hour of Fallen Angels is a lecture on pop music history, and the body -- the center of the mystery -- doesn't appear until hour two. And what's with Varg's endless, irrelevant reveries on the girls he grew up with and their body parts? I was glad to be able to return this one.

I've loved this series, in large part because of Richard Armitage's narration. But seriously: Eliminate tea from English detective novels and they'd all be 30 percent shorter.
