Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Good listen and a good story!
Revisado: 02-23-25
Charlie is a teenage boy from just outside Chicago. His mother was tragically killed on a one lane bridge that left his father to loose his job and climb into a bottle becoming an alcoholic. Charlie took care of his father and roles were reversed as he nurtured him back from alcoholism. Charlie is a nurturer by nature. He even prayed to God asking him to restore his father and not to loose his home. In fact he promises God he will be a better person and what will that be???
So much for a teenager to absorb. Charlie is a good size kid and a decent athlete but he stumbles upon that one neighbor on the hill that is just plain ornery and so seems his German Shepherd-Radar. Everyone fears him as stories spread what’s inside his old house. Charlie on his way home hears Radar barking frantically and it seems as though Mr. Bodich (?) broke his leg on the ice-bad enough to be hospitalized and what becomes of Old decrepit Radar? Charlie comes to the rescue and the old man yells at him “not to touch anything in the home and shed” Charlie takes care of his dog and eventually takes on Mr.Bodich care as well. Mr. Boditch has gold pellets to pay for his surgeries and he begins to trust Charlie in details of a strange underground world. That explains the scratching sounds that come from his shed.
During years of a growing friendship-Mr. Boditch dies suddenly but leaves Charlie a video tape of a Tale so bizarre and explains Charlie can save Radar by putting her on a “turn table” merry go round and spinning it backwards to peel off years but beware………every fairy tale you have heard awaits Charlie and Radar as they climb down 160 some steps into a world filled with “: a woman in a shoe/ a beautiful mouthless princess/ evil dwarfs(sorry) a castle with a giant that rules this world now-taken away from the princess and her evil “night killer” brother Charle accomplishes Radar becoming younger looses her to find himself captured and having to make friends with people he may have to kill. He is captured by “Blue dead men” and falls prisoner to “Night Killer” .But Charlie is changing. He’s becoming a Prince:from the Fairy Tales we read as kids: His hair is blonde-he talks like a lord and is addressed as the “promise Prince”. He also is faster and stronger in this world and capable of leading people to rebel against the giant and her minions. Thing is does he stay and become a prince or take as much gold as he can -like Mr. Botitch and leave this world to fend for itself.
But now -can he leave ? Is he able? He is hunted by wolves and people of the dead trying to extinguish any fire he may bring to this word.

Revisado: 01-04-25
Book 7: one of my favorite books with mainly just Walt and although the favorites are not in this novel, this book gets you inside Walt’s head and explains this “Tribal Mysticism” that visits him in life threatening times.
Walt Longmire has in his possession, Raynaud Shade- a psychotic killer that is headed for jail for the rest of his life; suddenly he decides he wants to confess where he hid the body of a 7 year old victim. Now Walt and Deputy Santiago Saizarbitoria are responsible to escort Shade and a van full of dangerous prisoners to the FBI controlled body recovery. Hours in transit they finally meet up with the FBI at a restaurant and during lunch a chained up Raynaud Shade tries to get in Walt’s head. Shade is a member of the Canadian Crow Nation and slyly whispers to Walt that they are both the “same” and share the “voices in their heads” to allow them to kill people only Walt fortunately has a “badge” Walt dismisses the encounter but after feeding these conflicts their lunch Walt feels something is not right.
With prisoners digging for the body while the storm is baring down on them. The FBI’s front man brushes off Walt’s concerns and tells Walt their fine and for him to go back into town and acquire some rooms. Walt -asks who’s “paying for em”? And is told that the FBI will book them.
At the hotel Walt finds that no rooms have been arranged and with the diner closed …. This is strange and then with the diner closed he decides to eat his sandwich from lunch and bites into a “Bobby-Pin” with the ends bent at a 90* angle like a “key”. He grabs his radio and can not reach the FBi and with bad weather and iced roads he and Saizarbitoria head back to the scene. As they come up vehicles are in flames and a couple agents are dead. Now all communication is available due to this ice storm and Walt tells Sanchez to head back to get help while Walt tracks their prints in the snow. They can’t last long in this weather Walt thinks. But this is where the story begins:
Armed with the FBI’s weapons and hostages, Shade has planned this we hold escape-right down to some snow machines that take them straight up Bighorn Mountain. Walt is right behind with help from friend and billionaire Omar Rhodes that has a home in the mountains. Forced off the snow machines by weather it turns into a foot race. Walt is armed with a “Sharps” rifle,a satiate phone from a prisoner he overtakes and Sanchez’s cell phone with little juice and no bars. Sharp has an automatic rifle a few hardened conducts and a good head start.
Shade may hold the high ground and is dressed for the weather ; Walt has advantages: he knows the terrain -the twists and turns of this mountain and as he begins to experience hypothermia an old friend appears and helps him with encouragement and even carries the riffle for him. The higher he climbs -Walt wonders why he hasn’t seen Virgil White Buffalo in some time and why is he here on minute and not the next? The big thing Walt needs to discuss with Virgil is that the man they are chasing is responsible for Virgil’s grandson’s “disappearance “ a few years back. Should he tell him? Shade can not believe Walt is still coming after him. He is off his game as they talk by satellite phones and Shade even gets a few shots at Walt and has the perfect place to wait for him.
This is the story -true not much from other main characters in this book, but it does put you in Walt’s head and will explain some things as you go further in this series. 4 stars

Garrett Kohl #4. Round and round….
Revisado: 12-07-24
Another decent novel by Taylor Moore .
On leave from the DEA, Garrett Kohl -in debt from a range fire that nearly destroys his ranch, Garrett takes a chance and goes into the energy buisness and forms Savage Exploration in hopes of providing a financial future for his adoptive son Asadi and childhood girlfriend Lacy. His sister Grace, returns home for the first time since their mother’s death and strange things start to take place on the Kohl Ranch. It’s 9 months or so in the future of the last book and winter time. A unexplained accident at their power plant that sits on his property leave one inspector dead and Sheriff Tony’s son severely injured. Grace, meanwhile is not there to help in the family business but has secondary goal of secretly trying to merge what she thinks is a pipeline deal to the Texas coast with her shady -wealthy husband . This plan from Graces husband brings a team of workers that Kohl knows has military alliances. The Power plant explosion brings an environmental protest group and an ex ranger and former combat alliance, Kai Stoddard as their muscle. Now Garrett feels this Power plant explosion was no accident and after a brief skirmish with kai- Kai does his ex friend / fellow ranger a solid and helps Garrett identify the group (he knows his sister and her evil husband are involved somehow) Garrett and kai take on this over seas terrorist threat using their combined military skills to save his ranch and and Us soil. All this with the forming of one of the winters worst snow storm approaching and Asadi and Savana left behind by Vickie’s nephew (name escapes me-but something stupid.) while Asadi looses Savanah to nephew /possible half brother what’s his name as horses run wild on the sand dunes of the ranch. Butch/ Smitty/Bo/Ike /Mario/ The Taliban/ANA, and Asadi’s brother Farad all are in here so pay attention or better yet: read the book.
Asadi’s brother pops up in a CIA plot to bring home Liam’s father from Iran. Farad -a drug trafficker/enforcer is the driver with Kim brokering that deal gone wrong.
Cons: A lot of story lines that rotate enough to loose focus on any of them- due to all 3 plots are going on at the same time and they seem to leave the reader behind -with everything resolving at once.and predictable. So the worst thing is done: I just listen because it becomes a “tell”book and not a “show me” book. However, Good detail to action and once again -Moore knows his subject matter and he describes the beautiful Llano Estacado region of Texas like you are there. This could be a movie or a great 3 year series with the right screenwriter. I do not know if I will continue this journey with Kohl-seems like a great place to stop for both of us.

Easy Company, 506th Airborne Division, U.S. Army, was as good a rifle company as any in the world. From their rigorous training in Georgia in 1942 to D-Day and victory, Ambrose tells the story of this remarkable company, which kept getting the tough assignments. Easy Company was responsible for everything from parachuting into France early D-Day morning to the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. Band of Brothers is the account of the men of this remarkable unit.

I often wish if I could go back in time and live my life, this would be the generation I would choose. These men from this book stamp into my heart and mind what was sacrificed and accomplished in those years. Steve Ambrose will bring to life any book he pens. BOB and Citizen Soldier are my favorite books written by him. Thank you to all Vetrans for what you gave up to allow the rest of us a life that most this world can only dream about.

In Deep Hole, one of the world’s foremost crime novelists crafts a sweet, poignant romance novella that could only come from his perfectly calibrated sense of time and place. It incorporates fights and misunderstandings and rejection, and is set against the backdrop of a quiet surfing town in Rhode Island where everyone knows each other’s business—and pleasure.

Great short story.
Revisado: 12-04-23
Ed Harris rocks this Don Winslow short novel: it is the mid 1970’s -. Eddie is a New England cold weather surfer that can’t stay away from gambling. He’s a decent guy that has decent looks and enjoys life- He’s in the hole to a local mobbed up friend that has to collect on eddies short comings but he doesn’t really want to and it’s actually a test for him to his family on how he conducts himself. It’s either collect and be a scum ball for the rest of his life - in a loosing town or hatch a plan to get out -forever -one way or the other.
Worth the listen.

Homicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high, lonely place: a corpse with a mouth full of sand, abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo tribal police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer.

He did well with all the characters-even the whinny 10 year old boy. I do not know if I will invest in the series since there is so much out there but the book stands alone well.
