So repetitive!

This book was entirely too long. I like the concept but it really could have been well cover in 2 hours or less. I started to wonder if Mel was paid per page or book length. I had to stop listening halfway through because it was becoming a waste of my time.

Disappointed

I had to return this book despite being very interested in the topic. The author focused heavily on identity politics and made it a central point. If I wanted to hear more of this rhetoric, I’d go to CNN for career advice. Also, the women that she chose to profile are not role models for all (Stacey Abrahams, really?!). If she wanted to be fair in this approach, she could have included Tulsi Gabbard who is a likable badass by all accounts. But something tells me this author is incapable of being unbiased. In summary, don’t waste your credit on this unless playing identity politics is your thing.

More biased content by the left

I was intrigued by the potential but ultimately disappointed. The author is unprofessional and was unable to keep his personal biases in check. He discusses the ruling elite but does not mention Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, the Obamas, or the Clintons. He squarely focused his criticism on President Trump and the “far right”. Do not waste a credit on this propaganda garbage.

Couldn’t get through it…

I really wanted to experience this book but ultimately couldn’t and had to return it. The author’s voice and reading style became unbearable after the first hour. I felt like a child listening to my kindergarten teacher reading out loud to us. Her voice is grating too.

Awful narration

The narrator was terrible! I would have returned the book if it was any longer. Her reading skills were that of a middle schooler and I felt like I was in a classroom listening to someone read their paper for 2+ hours. Authors- please keep in mind how important the narrator is to an audio book for the sake of your audience.

Overall good

First, I loved that she was the narrator. I could listen to her speak for hours and not get annoyed one bit. So this is a book that lends itself well to the audio format. As for the content, I thought the first half was great. She dissected affairs thoroughly and covered them from every perspective. The second half lost me. The ideas that she, in my opinion, elevated do not align with my values and definition of a marriage. Polyamory and related views are covered pretty extensively so there was no value there for me. I feel like this could have been addressed separately for those interested- perhaps a different book.

Wow...

The writer wrote a beautiful, albeit disturbing, story that absolutely captivated me from beginning to end. The story, the writing, everything about this book was good. I can’t wait for her next book!!
The performance by the narrator was incredible. She did such a great job becoming Vanessa and taking us on the journey that is this story. Excellent work Grace!

One of the best books I’ve picked up

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the advice Mel shared is on 100% on target. She touched on problems areas that other books overlook. Thank you Mel! I’ll be listening to it again for sure.
