Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Hard-won integrity
Revisado: 06-13-18
This memoir intelligently portrays the painful contradictions involved in belonging to and loving a patriarchal fundamentalist poor family. The author pursues a sense of self through academic curiosity and attainment while remaining connected to her family of origin. The story is so well told and enlightening that it becomes universal as an exploration of balancing self and community, especially when the community is patriarchal and fundamentalist. This is a terrific book.

Historia
It’s like an old-time gangster movie: A speeding car, a blazing gun…and suddenly a guy walking down the street without a care in the world is lying in the gutter without a head on his shoulders. But who pulled the high-powered trigger that turned Sy Kramer from a blackmailer into a chalk outline? Was it the politician’s wife with a pornographic past? The soda-pop tycoon desperate to keep a business-busting bungle bottled up? Or was it whoever was paying Kramer a small fortune to hide what must’ve been one very big bad?

McBain hits it again
Revisado: 04-16-15
I've enjoyed listening to the Ed McBain 37th precinct books from my library and interlibrary loan system. But when I ran out of books that were available from that source, I was so happy to see that audible has so many of the titles. They also have them with the series number in the series included in the listing, so I've been going through them all from the beginning. They are great, and this one is no exception. McBain fans: dig in!

Historia
On Getting Unstuck, Pema Chodron introduces a rare Tibetan teaching she received from her teacher, Dzigar Kontrul Rinpoche, and one that has become critical to her practice. Here, she unveils the mystery of an ineffable quality; a "pre-emotional" feeling that arises in us, brings us discomfort, and causes us to react by escaping the discomfort, often with harmful habits. With Getting Unstuck, she offers us a first look at "both the itch and the scratch": what Tibetan Buddhists call shenpa.
