and what happened next
Revisado: 08-08-21
Long as this book is, I was sorry when it ended. I bought it because I knew the readers were good, and so they were. Spending so many hours listening to those two is so many hours of bliss. The story of the book is good, even if full of the usual tropes. The writing is at least grammerly checked, and the characters don't contradict themselves. The contradictions that can invade a human life are well represented. The youthful love in the middle of the end of the world was, at least, youthful. Only the very brave would sacrifice so many lives to stop saving the world to get married. That's youth for ya.

Historia
Just when Baron Minalan the Spellmonger figured out there was a slim chance to restore his mind-shattered wife Alya (if he's willing to journey to the undercaverns of Olum Seheri, the lair of Korbal the Necromancer), things start to go awry: not only does Prince Tavard, his unloved liege lord, decide to conduct an official state visit to Sevendor on pilgrimage to the Everfire on the Briga's feast day, but a mysterious seamage appears at his door with an intriguing offer from the Sea Folk who rule Callidore: They want to buy snowstone. An entire mountain of it.

top rate
Revisado: 07-06-21
Good book, well edited, excellent performer. The Spell monger is much more mature now, directing the participants in the astonishing range of adventures rather than performing so many heroics. Having a key battle in the middle instead of using it as the ending signals that this is not a cliff hanger series, edited for the primary purpose of making you buy the next book to see what happened. This is a book that stands tall on its very long own. There are horrors, but having them dealt with in an interesting way is very satisfying.

It's a copy of the Royal Spyness novelettes but
Revisado: 05-08-21
But it's a very good copy, and comes with an excellent narrator. And by copy, I don't imply a copyright infringement, but more of a copy of the general idea. This book is amusing, well paced, a book that will brighten your day. And the Spyness novels have an inferior narrator so you won't be listening to them any more.

It's just a collection of ways to avoid procrastinating. Uninteresting (mostly) if you don't procrastinate in the first place, or if you already know how to avoid falling into this bad habit. This was a wasted credit. Also, listening to the strained and sometimes condescending voice of the narrator was tiresome. A better narrator would at least have made this a good listen for falling asleep to. At least he spoke proper English.

Weak performance, flabby writing
Revisado: 04-25-21
Bad and brackfasting beyond endurance. I thought I might be able to use this as material for English as a second language courses, since to some foreigners soap opera style writing is an insight into the "way Americans live". A world where people "socialize" instead of do things together and where you always have to mention that every person in the family was individually grateful if they all liked something. But really, didn't it ever occur to anyone that a book about Nantucket should not be read with a Western US accent!!

editing problem
Revisado: 03-13-21
Evidently this was written as a serialized article, requiring a reiteration of background information to accompany each sequential article. Proper editing would have removed this problem, but was omitted. The beginning part of the story is boring beyond belief, and a good editor would have edited this section out or into some other location within the story. The narration technique of slowing down or even stopping the story at moments of tension might be the sort of cute narration you expect from some old men, but the cuteness of this wears thin quickly. This book was quite an unsatisfactory listen.

Historia
Virtually all human societies were once organized tribally, yet over time most developed new political institutions which included a central state that could keep the peace and uniform laws that applied to all citizens. Some went on to create governments that were accountable to their constituents. We take these institutions for granted, but they are absent or are unable to perform in many of today’s developing countries—with often disastrous consequences for the rest of the world.

new narrator needed
Revisado: 02-12-21
A huge section is about China and every single Chinese name is mispronounced. Shameful. Jonathan Davis should not have agreed to narrate this book, and the idea that nobody cares about the mispronunciations of Chinese words is a prejudicial disgrace. Whichever editor made that decision should be treated to a 15 hour listening experience with every single English word badly mispronounced. It stops being funny pretty soon
