Historia
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

Really fun listen

The story is both funny and engaging, and the performance is excellent. I found the ending very satisfying as well.

Historia
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

Historia
Belisarius is a quantum man, an engineered Homo quantus who fled the powerful insight of dangerously addictive quantum senses. He found a precarious balance as a con man, but when a client offers him untold wealth to move a squadron of warships across an enemy wormhole, he must embrace his birthright to even try. In fact, the job is so big that he'll need a crew built from all the new sub-branches of humanity. If he succeeds, he might trigger an interstellar war, but success might also point the way to the next step of Homo quantus evolution.

Excellent narration, good story
Revisado: 08-24-20
This was a good story although it dragged through the middle. It's also pretty complex and there were parts when it was hard to follow the action because if you miss a few details, it will come back to haunt you later in the book. That said, the science was engaging and the view of humanity's future felt very possible. Overall it was worth the listen.
The author did a particularly good job describing what it might be like to be worshipped by people who value the presence of a god more than they value the god himself. Most writers, when they try something like this, end up having the worshippers act like paparazzi, i.e. annoying and maybe even dangerous, but not abhorrent. Kunsken nails it, and it makes the story.
The narrator was outstanding. He reminded me of an early George Guidall. I will be looking for him on other titles.

Historia
They failed to drive her out of the military academy, but one in three women are still leaving West Point. Jan Wishart fights for survival in her second year at the formerly all male citadel, where the women cadets continue to endure body shaming, sexism, and contempt from the higher ups. When one of her friends shows signs of abuse and later commits suicide, Jan's coming of age year gets even more complicated. The culture of hazing and harassment must be addressed...sometimes the best way to call attention to an issue is to leak it the press.

Excellent again
Revisado: 07-01-20
This is the second book in a series, although the story stands well on its own. I liked the first book very much because it was a good story wrapped in an authentic look at life behind the scenes at West Point in the early days of coeducation. By contrast, this book is lighter on the USMA trivia and much more substantial with the story itself. Spieth again finds a way to deliver a final twist, only this time even more masterfully, the kind of twist you don't even know you're looking for and then kick yourself for not seeing sooner. Well done and well worth a listen.

Good story, excellent characters, accurate details
Revisado: 05-26-20
I read this with interest because I attended West Point myself just a little after the events depicted. Given that the author is also a graduate, I wasn't surprised that the book was a fun trip down memory lane, but this book is much better than just a rundown of West Point trivia. The story was engaging from the beginning and the ending caught me wonderfully off guard. I think the best part though was the insight into life as female cadet in the early days of women at the Academy. Sure there are some jerks in the story, but the real power is in Spieth's description of inadvertent, systemic sexism. It's a powerful look at life as a minority, and the beauty of it is that it's not trying to be. It is, first and foremost, just a damn good story. I highly recommend it.
