This book had me crying multiple times for all the right reasons. I’d recommend this to everyone but especially to people who have a hard time emphasizing with LGBTQIA+ people. This demonstrates just how hard it can be for us to just exist.

This book is what happens when you take the spirit of a story like Pirates of The Caribbean and write a brand new tale in an entirely different setting. Listening to this book gave me that same feelings as a teenage me had when watching Pirates of The Caribbean for the first time.

I found Amina incredibly relatable and likable. All of the characters felt grounded and real. The villain was the right amount of evil without their motivations just being for the sake of evil.

I loved the low fantasy mixed with historical fiction, and how the more fantastical elements of the story were specifically tied to the cultures touched on in this book (or at least as far as I know). It’s made me want to go and learn more about this settling which I think is a serious testament to how well Chakraborty writes all of this.

Lastly, but definitely not least, the readers were incredible. I heard Amina and Jamal. Those actors became them and I can’t think of another performance quite like this.

A fun romp

It’s a fun, fast paced story that left me feeling just as satisfied as finishing any of the books in Era 1 or in the Stormlight Archive. The characters aren’t as fleshed out as they typically are in lengthier titles and the story isn’t as complex but it feels like listening to an old cowboy story and I think that is was Sanderson was going for.

Michael Kramer did. a fantastic job, as always, and I would recommend this to anyone who likes Sanderson’s writing and Kramer’s performance already, as well as to anyone who is looking for a fun story with good voice acting; especially if that person doesn’t want to invest 30+ hours into a book.

The story is a fun romp with characters that you just weren’t ready to give up at the end of Ready Player One. The beginning feels a little slow to me but picks up around the 25-30% mark. The ending didn’t hit for me, but I feel like that is more personal preference and I don’t want to go deeper in order to avoid spoilers.

It feels less serious but that’s not a bad thing. It’s fun, has a decent amount of suspense, and we get more of the characters we love from book one. Definitely worth the time if you enjoyed the first book.

The characters are fantastic, well thought out, believable, and relatable. The story is well paced and doesn’t drag at any point. I think this is because Sanderson’s masterfully releases the perfect amount of new information to keep the reader consistently wanting more, but not so much that it feels like an exposition dump. The following of several characters help with this as it allows the story to progress slower than a book with a single protagonist which allows for more intricate and detailed world-building.

The performances are good but there are some inconsistencies with how the voice actors pronounce words which took me out of the story a bit and Readings voice is a bit too stilted for my taste but none of that really diminishes the performance beyond the superficial.

Overall, this was a fantastic listen and has gotten really into this series.
