Lisa Patton won the hearts of readers with her book Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’easter, which became a sleeper-success. Building on a smashing debut, Lisa’s poised to go to the next level—because whether in Vermont snow or in Memphis heat, Dixie heroine Leelee Satterfield is never too far from misadventure, calamity—and ultimately, love.

Wanted to love it
Revisado: 04-17-21
I wanted to like this book. I had fun with the Vermont book but somehow this one felt silly. It was well written and often funny, but the characters felt larger than life and at times difficult to distinguish. I liked the main character better when she struggled in Vermont. I kept telling her and her buddies to grow up. They never did.

Historia
On a scorching day in August 1954, 13-year-old Jubie Watts leaves Charlotte, North Carolina, with her family for a Florida vacation. Crammed into the Packard along with Jubie are her three siblings, her mother, and the family’s black maid, Mary Luther. For as long as Jubie can remember, Mary has been there - cooking, cleaning, compensating for her father’s rages and her mother’s benign neglect, and loving Jubie unconditionally.

thoughtful depiction of the 1950s south
Revisado: 03-22-21
This story depicted the 1950s south with clarity and less judging than most books of this sort. It let the characters comment. The villain was all bad which is unfortunate and a bit too easy. It did not conclude in a happiness forever manner. I really enjoyed this portrayal and would recommend it to anybody interested in a good tale realisticly presented. Thank you.

Historia
Every child prodigy grows up eventually. For the Promise sisters, escaping their mother's narcissism and the notoriety that came with her best-selling book hasn't been easy. Minerva Promise claimed that her three test-tube daughters - gifted pianist Joanie, artistic Meg, and storyteller Avery - were engineered and molded to be geniuses. In adulthood, their modest lives fall far short of her grand ambitions.

fun and easy
Revisado: 11-11-20
This improbable tale featured interesting and improbable people and situations. It was fun and despite suspended reality, it was a fun read. Predictably, girls all meet boys and live happily ever after. But the head injury part was too much for me. It simply is generally not that simple. But, when you suspend belief, you must do it all the way. But, at the end, I felt a but empty. If all things had not been so neatly tied up, I would have been a bit happier. A sweet weekend generally never makes up for a life of lies. But, it was fun.

Keep reading if you are creeped out by the beginning. The only thing I did not like about this humaine and well-crafted book was the portrayal of dimentia
But, keep reading and thinking. Oh family family. .

Growing up is hard to do
Revisado: 03-07-18
First of all, I am a huge fan of Trollope writers. Anthony and Joanna both write with love and conviction, about the middle class people they know. They like their characters and so do I.
This book and story are about growing up and relationships and change. I like the people as is generally the case with the Trollopes. It is a kind book without being sappy. The story and people are compelling and true. If you like people and good writing, read the book. You will be sad when it is over but the characters are not that easily dismissed. They will be with you when you least expect their visit. Offer tea and enjoy their story.

better and better
Revisado: 12-27-17
As I have said before, this author seems to warm to both his tale and his characters as the series progresses. The characters seem less stereotypical and more generously detailed to humanize their stories and the England of their time. I recommend this series of books, and this particular book to anyone who enjoys a good story presented over generations and with no particular hurry to learn about the characters and era. I find the naration a bit dramatic but that is simply how I feel about Audible books in general. I

I couldn't put this book down. Finally, Gasworthy let his characters show us their true selves. Anyone who enjoys a fine tale and the post-war era populated by arresting characters should read this book.
I think the second series is so much superior to the first. It is a tale worth the read. I didn't want it to end. I still miss both old and young Jollian

Finally happiness in the family
Revisado: 11-29-17
I think anyone who loves a good tale well told will love this novel with one foot in the Victorian era and the other well planted in modernity"
The concerns I have with Galsworthy's earlier novels as being overly self-conciously satyrical, seem to be able to allow the characters to tell the story themselves instead of following the heavy hand of the author" I did not find the reader's highly dramatic interpretation of the story of love of place and family to get in the way as much as it did in the earlier novels.
Dinny is a strong and appealing character as she embodies the most positive of English traits. Read this book and disappear in to it. Have fun in there. I did.

Great story, great performance
Revisado: 11-15-17
I am a huge Trollope fan, both Anthony and Joanna.
She writes with love and grit about family life in Modern England. We care about her people and wish them all the very best. The reader was outstanding and not the sadly to frequent overly dramatic Audible reader. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a grand tale well told. Read it and then anything else Trollopean.

Historia
The three novels that make up The Forsyte Saga chronicle the ebbing social power of the commercial upper-middle class Forsyte family through three generations, beginning in Victorian London during the 1880s and ending in the early 1920s. Galsworthy's masterly narrative examines not only their fortunes but also the wider developments within society, particularly the changing position of women.

Property and beauty
Revisado: 08-29-17
I am a fan of Victorian novels, particularly Anthony Trollope. galsworthy is fascinated by this time period with all of the contrasts within. This book was a bit overread as are many audible recordings, but the writing is good enough to overcome the overripe reading.
Galsworthy characters are drawn well and I think anyone fond of a tale well told would love this book.
It is long and worth the hours of reading time. The characters and story are memorable.
