Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Historia
Suddenly finding herself 40 and single, Lori Gottlieb said the unthinkable in her March 2008 article in The Atlantic: Maybe she, and single women everywhere, needed to stop chasing the elusive Prince Charming and instead go for Mr. Good Enough. Looking at her friends' happy marriages to good enough guys who happen to be excellent husbands and fathers, Gottlieb declared it time to reevaluate what we really need in a partner. By looking at everything from culture to biology, in Marry Him, Gottlieb frankly explores the dilemma that so many women today seem to face.

Interesting
Revisado: 12-14-22
This book echoes a lot of reflection I've had on the way that relationships have changed over time. I want to say that the Chicago Sun had an eye opening article on this subject that evades me now. A lot of women are told to never lower their standards but it is possible that modern fantasies delude us into perpetual dissatisfaction. I think that this book could have pushed that subject harder but it was interesting to read and reflect on, for sure. It was accessible. I think it could have done a better job on balancing the potentially problematic nature of the subject matter. I know some people won't be able to read this without feeling defensive while others won't be able to read this without using it to degrade themselves. Get a therapist and then read this lol.

Historia
At first, high school freshmen Rex McClendon and Leif Nelson believe what they’ve been told - that local students’ strange demises at Whitewood, a local reformatory, were all tragic accidents. But when the shoot for their low-budget horror masterpiece, PolterDog, goes horribly awry - and their best friend, Alicia Boykins, is sent to Whitewood - Rex and Leif are forced to question everything they know about their unassuming hometown and its cherished school for delinquents.

Longtime Reader and Rhett/Link Fan Here
Revisado: 01-28-20
Hey all.
Full disclosure: I have been a super fan of Rhett and Link for a long time. I was ecstatic to hear about their debut novel. I pre-ordered it the first day. I'm also a longtime reader, so I am a bit critical. These factors are at odds, but I think my review is fair for the perspective of a 24 year old.
The diction is enticing and impressive. The moments of humor are quirky and characteristic; they definitely add personality to the novel. Many of the conversations have that appeal of being "this is actually a goofy conversation two kids would have" in that "snapshot of life yet intriguing" Tarantino way, although this is obviously done in a different tone. I love that Rhett and Link take so much inspiration from the South and the time period. I love the oddities like the roll and the kidney stones. There are a lot of interesting characters. All these elements create a signature for their writing, now and in the future.
Some of the other horror elements weren't as eerie or as original as I would've liked. I think the biggest improvement that could've been made to this book would be if it were longer and more detailed to really flesh out the plot and the characters. That way, the reader could become immersed in this other world and feel more invested in the story. It seems like the time at the reform school is slim. Alicia and Leif come and go so quickly. The first 70% of the novel still felt like exposition. If this turns into a series, I'll read it, and the pacing would make some more sense, but I was just left wanting more. I want more weirdness, more creepy descriptions, more drama! I think Rhett and Link could really TAKE IT THERE!!!
If the story is moreso for a young audience, then maybe I'm being too critical, but I think they did want to have a wide audience with this novel, and many young readers pick up hefty, challenging works.
I also agree with many others that the narrator detracted from the story. Please get someone who can balance the humor and the sinister.

When Tranquila Obiit's salty, daytime television-addicted grandmother tricks her into selling her soul to Hades, dodging near-death experiences becomes a daily ritual. Now, as an employee of the Underworld, Tranquila is pet-sitting a three-headed dog that is hell-bent on destroying her. She's not alone: Hades is battling negative Hollywood stereotypes. Original premise and good sense of humor
Revisado: 06-04-19
I've been meaning to read this book for a long time, as Meaghan is a young female writer from Utica, NY (which I can relate to). It's very apparent how these demographics influenced her work, and we could use more of these influences in fiction. I've always been impressed by the initiative Meaghan took by publishing this book. As far as the plot goes, and as far as I'm concerned, everyone loves Greek mythology. It was fun to learn about the history of these myths, and the narrative style was very natural. The dark humor was greatly appreciated, particularly the joke about goth vampires (my fave). This was a modern take on these familiar, ancient tales; I liked the awareness of how euphemized Greek myths can be and how we bring our own biases into our reading of them. Female empowerment and social justice are definitely themes in this book. Although no one asked, perhaps the book could've been a little better with more narrative. It seems dialogue heavy, and although I'm never one to say this, I would've liked to hear more about the scenery, given Hades is such an interesting and unusual setting. When these descriptions come up, the diction can be powerful and unexpected. The book took a lot of creativity, and given it's dark humor, I think some more suspense, weightiness, and detail on ancient Greek culture (given it influenced Greek myths) could've contrasted the light-hearted jokes well. I look forward to seeing what Meaghan does next.

Here is the dazzling saga of two women: the brilliant, bookish Elena and the fiery, uncontainable Lila. Both are now adults; many of life's great discoveries have been made, its vagaries and losses have been suffered. Through it all, the women's friendship has remained the gravitational center of their lives. Both women once fought to escape the neighborhood in which they grew up - a prison of conformity, violence, and inviolable taboos.

Slow yet captivating
Revisado: 05-13-19
This book should relate to many women, especially those of the lower class. I felt so involved in these women's lives, from beginning to end. The story doesn't hesitate to draw comparisons and say what it means and hypothesize, which I find refreshing. It sets a distinct setting and tone. It's realistic, and yet true life events become thematic metaphors, as life sometimes seems to have that deeper meaning, even when you question the point of it all.
