Historia
Six years after four family members died of arsenic poisoning, the three remaining Blackwoods—elder, agoraphobic sister Constance; wheelchair-bound Uncle Julian; and 18-year-old Mary Katherine, or, Merricat—live together in pleasant isolation. Merricat has developed an idiosyncratic system of rules and protective magic to guard the estate against intrusions from hostile villagers. But one day a stranger arrives—cousin Charles, with his eye on the Blackwood fortune.

An Unreal Reality
Revisado: 11-07-14
Which character – as performed by Bernadette Dunne – was your favorite?
Mary Kat
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes!
Any additional comments?
A bizarre and quirky rendition of a child's/woman's? daydreams and her outlook on reality. Her mind is definitely unstable and her sister isn't altogether there either, but they care for each other deeply and the cruelties of the strangers seem unfair. This story has an eerie quality to it, but it's all presented in a light, delusional atmosphere that doesn't really help with the creepy factor. You find yourself almost agreeing with some of the thoughts the main character has throughout the book. But, like I said, bizarre. I feel like there are a few questions the author purposefully didn't answer in the book, to keep the reading either guessing or formulating their own thoughts, but it would be awesome to have an "extra" section that explains some of the behavior and thoughts of the characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
YES

Some writers have this incredible ability to spend dozens of pages describing a single moment and you're riveted to every word. Pierce Brown has an equal but opposite talent, describing an incredible journey, with a maelstrom of emotions and a multitude of unforgettable characters all within 16 hours of listening. Let's not forget the leading voice my ears listened to for those 16 hours. I would have no other vocal performer read to me, other than Reynolds, if I could. Excellent story. Excellent performance. I hope there's a sequel.

Historia
Little more than 100 years ago, maps of the world still boasted white space: places where no human had ever trod. Within a few short decades the most hostile of the world's environments had all been conquered. Likewise, in the 20th century, medicine transformed human life. Doctors took what was routinely fatal and made it survivable. As modernity brought us ever more into different kinds of extremes, doctors pushed the bounds of medical advances and human endurance. Extreme exploration challenged the body in ways that only the vanguard of science could answer.

Revisado: 10-15-14
Any additional comments?
This book is about how exploration science has shaped medicine. How we prep the body to handle extreme situations so that we can push the boundaries of where we can survive, like exploring Antartica or Space. Based on exploratory science, that revolution has also impacted medicine when treating day-to-day problems. It's very interesting and well written, as well as performed! The author leaves the reader with an overall understanding of how medicine has transformed from what it was to what it is now today and why. The kind of general information that can sound impressive at a small get-together, so long as no one asks too many insightful questions!

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Revisado: 10-15-14
What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?
Does a fantastic job switching between multiple characters. His voice portrays the story and never dominates your attention. It was excellent.
Any additional comments?
This book started off slow, interesting, but nothing spectacular. I believe the author was setting up the mood and mapping out puzzle pieces for the listener. Then the second half of the audio started and it was a fanfare of events. Really gripping action and the mysteries unraveled one after another. The twist was surreal and very exciting. I definitely enjoyed this story.

This is CH 2 in The Rose and the Thorn
Revisado: 09-14-14
Any additional comments?
The author wrote this a while back when trying to produce the Riyria chronicles. Eventually, this short story ended up in The Rose and The Thorn. I was really hoping it was another short story, just like The Jester, but it's not. However, it can still stand on its own if you don't want to buy the entire book. Although I would HIGHLY recommend reading this series. It is incredible! Just as a heads up The Riyria Chronicles depicts how the two main characters met and came to form a partnership/friendship even though they're polar opposites. The first book in the series is "The Crown Tower" and the second is "The Rose and the Thorn". The series that was written before the Chronicles, was The Riyria Revelations and the author published those first. Well, hope you get this and enjoy it as much as I did!

Stop me if you’ve heard this one. A thief, a candlemaker, an ex-mercenary, and a pig farmer walk into a trap…and what happens to them is no joke. When Riyria is hired to retrieve a jester’s treasure, Royce and Hadrian must match wits with a dwarf who proves to be anything but a fool. Difficult choices will need to be made, and in the end those who laugh last do so because they are the only ones to survive.

Too short! Want more!
Revisado: 09-14-14
What made the experience of listening to FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale) the most enjoyable?
Well, I guess because this was a Free short story donated by M.J. Sullivan to help his friend out, I really shouldn't complain. However, it was phenomenal! My hour commute to school was about as long as this short story is and I was extremely disappointed that I wouldn't have more of the tale to listen to on the way back. M.J. Sullivan is such a talented writer!
What was one of the most memorable moments of FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale)?
The characters were in a precarious situation and (trying here not to give anything away) to get their way out, they had to use a bit of thinking, solving a puzzle/riddle of sorts. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't straight out solving stuff, the story was descriptive with action and filled with emotions of excitement and fear, but in the background there was some....thinking involved by a certain character. It was very intriguing.
Have you listened to any of Tim Gerard Reynolds’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. From the other Riyria Chronicles books. Fabulous as ever!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Definitely laugh.
Any additional comments?
Even if you don't find this author or the performance of T.G. Reynold's as fabulous as I do, this is free, it'll give you a good idea of what the main characters are like and whether you want more.

Just as AMAZING as the first
Revisado: 09-14-14
What did you love best about The Rose and the Thorn?
I thought the second book in the series couldn't be as great as the first, The Crown Tower, but I am so happy to have been proven wrong. It was just as incredible and left me wanting more of the story between the two main characters. The author does, however, leave each book with a conclusion so that a listener/reader can feel free to jump between books or not worry about waiting on another book for the story line to continue.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Rose and the Thorn?
I love the interaction between the two main characters. They each have specific set of characteristics that they stick true to and each believes that he is right in the way he views the world. So to one-up each other they always try to find ways to prove that one of them is right and the other is wrong. It's a small part of the story, but these small moments of rivalry give the characters a realistic vibe.
Which character – as performed by Tim Gerard Reynolds – was your favorite?
Both. T.G. Reynolds is a genius. He even made the female voices sound, well, like women and I never was taken aback by the change in his vocals.
Any additional comments?
Most definitely recommend this book and all his others!

THE MOST AMAZING BOOK EVER
Revisado: 09-14-14
Where does The Crown Tower rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The BEST by far and I've listened to a few really great ones!
What did you like best about this story?
Where do I begin? First off, the author's writing is polished, flows like a natural story-teller would sound if speaking to you directly, the conversation between characters is witty, funny, stays true to each characters personality, and wow are the main characters so well balanced against each other. Somehow M.J. Sullivan made two people, who are like oil and water, work so well together.
What does Tim Gerard Reynolds bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
T. G. Reynolds is an absolutely unconventional talent. He brought every character to life and disappeared into the background so that all I heard and saw in my mind's eye was the story. Absolutely brilliant, I cannot recommend his voice enough.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Every. Single. Page.
Any additional comments?
You get a bit of drama, action, wit, comedy, danger, excitement...just a whole range of emotions play out in this book. I have, since finishing this book, finished the rest of the series under this title and bought his other series, the Riyria Revelations, I believe.

For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements: You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world...or you can join the service. With the colony lottery a pipe dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth.

Detail Oriented
Revisado: 08-13-14
Would you listen to Terms of Enlistment again? Why?
No. Very interesting, very detailed. I learned a lot of lingo from a military sci-fi perspective. Lots of details about weapons, movement of troops, running one way, running another way. Lots of shouting. To me this was portrayed as a snapshot in the life of a soldier, with some advanced technology and problems in a distant future. The story had a few great branches, all of which were never developed, and I believe it was purposefully done to leave the reader with a real-world look at "life". This also allows the author to create a series, if he chooses. I appreciated the military aspect because I have a few friends in the army, but myself being a "civie" the very minute details were lost on me and I was left trying to imagine something I had never seen.
Would you be willing to try another book from Marko Kloos? Why or why not?
If all his books are written like this, then I don't think so. I prefer my stories to have closure, unless the open-ended conclusion is meant to prequel a continuation in the series. I also can't keep up with the heavy technical aspect of a soldier's life, at some points I found myself zoning out.
Any additional comments?
Good overall, and I did enjoy the main character's perspective, but a book I would recommend only to people familiar with a range of weapons.

Scott Adams has likely failed at more things than anyone you’ve ever met or anyone you’ve even heard of. So how did he go from hapless office worker and serial failure to the creator of Dilbert, one of the world’s most famous syndicated comic strips, in just a few years? In How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, Adams shares the strategy he has used since he was a teen to invite failure in, to embrace it, then pick its pocket.

Revisado: 08-05-14
What did you love best about How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big?
Scott Adams really knows how to communicate with his audience and he portrays serious topics alongside humor really well, without ever losing the message of the book in the details.
What does Patrick Lawlor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Patrick Lawlor did a phenomenal reading, I truly perceived his voice as being the voice of Scott Adams, he embodied the work so beautifully, it was absolutely flawless.
What insight do you think you’ll apply from How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big?
There was definitely plenty of advice that you could potentially follow, but above all else, I couldn't stop listening because afterwards I always felt happier and more inclined towards productivity. This audiobook has done for me what no amount of encouragement from anywhere else ever could. I applaud Scott Adams genius in writing and Patrick Lawlor's talent in making the words come alive.
