Historia
When he was 10 years old, Paul Fronczak was snooping around for Christmas presents in a crawl space in his family’s Chicago home. There, he found hundreds of old newspaper clippings about the kidnapping of a one-day-old infant in a hospital in 1964. He also learned that, two years later, the boy was found and returned to his family - and that the boy was him. Nearly 50 years later, Paul, acting on long-held suspicions, took a DNA test that proved he was not the kidnapped boy. In an instant, he found himself at the center of two half-century-old mysteries.

About 60% rehash
Revisado: 01-08-22
I'm as fascinated with Paul Fronczak's story as the folks who gave this book great reviews. And I enjoyed the book myself; I'm not sorry I bought it. But I wanted to note that there's not a lot new here. The first 50% of the book rehashes the first book. The 2nd half contains material that is known from news reports about finding the real Paul Fronczak. And as others have spoiled, he doesn't find his twin sister, despite the title. If you're as fascinated with the case as I am, go ahead and listen; but for others, beware...you might want to spend your credit elsewhere.

Great show-biz bio

I have always loved Martin Short...and share his fascination with old-time showbiz. Hearing him do his own characters, as well as imitate those who pop up in the book, is a real treat. Lots of fun.

Historia
Bernard Elliot, a poet, and Frances Reardon, a fiction writer, meet at a writers' colony during the summer of 1957 and begin a friendship and correspondence. Bernard, well-born and Harvard-educated, is gregarious, reckless, and passionate; Frances, the precocious daughter of a middle-class Irish family, is circumspect, wry, and more than a little judgmental. What starts as an exploration of faith eventually becomes a romance, a development complicated by Bernard's fall into manic depression and Frances' struggle to decide whether she is strong enough to weather the illness with him for the long term.

Intriguing, surprising
Revisado: 01-18-15
I did not know when I listened that the book was somewhat based on the poet Robert Lowell and the writer Flannery O'Connor...but it also diverged quite a bit from their lives (O'Connor was certainly not a Philadelphian). I found the story-told-in-letters technique engaging and the story went in ways that I didn't expect. Very enjoyable.

Not an easy book to read, due to what she endured both before and after her kidnapping. I came away admiring her very much. Hope that she is doing well.

Historia
English anthropologist Andrew Bankson has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers' deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Nell and Fen have just fled the bloodthirsty Mumbanyo and, in spite of Nell's poor health, are hungry for a new discovery.

Intriguing plot, great writing
Revisado: 01-18-15
I didn't know when I listened to this that the characters were based on Margaret Mead, one of her husbands, and a colleague. I'm glad, because I could imagine them without models. Really enjoyed the depiction of Papua New Guinea long ago and the anthropologists' life. Very enjoyable.

In this brave and moving memoir, Corey Feldman is revealing the truth about what his life was like behind the scenes: His is a past that included physical, drug, and sexual abuse, a dysfunctional family from which he was emancipated at age fifteen, three high-profile arrests for drug possession, a nine-month stint in rehab, and a long, slow crawl back to the top of the box office.

Really amazing how this kid was raised and the dearth of emotional ties with his family. He must have had talent; he got a lot of work. Great mimic of Michael Jackson and others in his life.

Relentlessly depressing and without depth
Revisado: 01-18-15
A very minimalist family drama; the characters are very ordinary. No emotional progress is made until the very end. I didn't find it worth the wait.

In What Really Happened, Rielle Hunter offers an extremely personal account of her relationship with John Edwards: the facts of how they actually met; how their accidental love started and escalated; what it was like to fall in love with a married man who decided to run for president; the surprise of becoming pregnant during the campaign; how the affair became public; the extensive coverup, and finally, what happened in the years after Edwards publicly admitted to being the father of their daughter, Frances Quinn.

What a character...
Revisado: 08-22-12
I know most people would be disgusted by this story--and so am I, of course (cough)--but I found it fascinating for a particular reason. I was a huge fan of "The Story of My Life" by Jay McInerney in the 1990s, which we found out later (as the John Edwards story broke) was based on Rielle Hunter in her 20s. What's amazing is how (apparently) true that novel was to her character, and to top it off, the narrator absolutely nails it. About 60% of the book is a mundane listing of the hotels they stayed at, the restaurants they ate at, and what they ate....but I also thoroughly enjoyed all that. Not for everyone, but for those of us with a sick fascination for people who can rationalize and justify just about any behavior...it's a guilty pleasure.

Premise is fascinating
Revisado: 08-22-12
The premise of the book--time out of whack, living day for night and night for day, and "Circadia"--really stuck with me. I liked the narrator, and the narration, but sometimes wished I could hear another (more mature) perspective.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.
