Well developed storyline with some interesting twists and turns. A good combination of science and fiction.

Politics aside, Admiral McRaven is an awesome, inspirational storyteller. I knew some of those mentioned and was involved, much less directly, in some of these events and they are spot on. If you like these tales, look up his speeches. They are tremendous and give quite thoughtful advice.

Book 1 (this one) had a good storyline from the Sci-Fi perspective. However, although it has an initial Sci-Fi flavor, the four book series becomes more of a romance series from a woman’s point of view, including the plot, the male characters the way she would prefer them to be (unreasonable expectations), and fairly explicit sex sections. Toward the end of the series, it seems to be more about sex and less about plot.

It is a shame that a good start in this series gets waylaid into a R+ rated Harlequin Romance Novel. I highly rated the first book. If I were to rate the other three, each book would bring the number of stars further down.

Good WW-II Submariner Story

I have read many World War II submarine/submariner books. Most are much more technical than this one. They are great if you want to know the intricacies of the war below. This book, however, focuses more on the human aspects of this story. If you don't care about all of the details of operating a WW-II submarine, and instead want a good human interest story, this is it.

This book talks about one of the more successful submarine Commanding Officers as told through the eyes of his Chief Petty Officer. It stayed interesting throughout the entire book.

The Real Scoop about PT Boats during World War II

I have studied history with an emphasis of the historical times of the World War II era. This book is an accurate portrayal of the life and operations aboard American PT boats in the Pacific during the war. It is sufficiently detailed to keep your interest, yet not overly so. The story moves at a good pace. Although it is obvious the narrator was not a sailor himself - this becomes obvious when several nautical terms are mispronounced - he does a very good job representing a first-hand narration by the author.

If you have any interest at all in what the small boat operations were like win World War II, this book should be on your reading list.

Very realistic portrayal of life about a World War II American submarine. Just the right balance of action, personal lives, and history. Listen to it or read the books – you won’t be disappointed.

48 Hours has an interesting storyline. It does go overboard on explanations, almost like the author doesn't expect the reader (listener) to remember important points about the storyline. I can see repeating really important information that is key to understanding how the information affects the plot, but twice is enough. Several items kept getting repeated over and over. Other than this minor criticism, it was a good story that held my interest.

The narrator was pretty good; however, there were two things that bugged me. First, whenever anyone was suppose to be getting upset and start shouting, it felt all wrong. Only the last few words were shouted out, which made the shouting (yes, there is a lot of it) seem quite fake and the inflections just were not, in my opinion, appropriate. A lot of those times, it felt like the character was psycho in the way they showed anger or stress, or it was just out of place.

The second item that bugged me about the narration is that, it seemed the narrator got in over his head with the different voices of the characters. Towards the end, the characters tended to sound like each other at times. I know it is a tough job coming up with many distinct voices, but it did detract form the storyline.

In spite of what I said above, I still thought it was a great story and I would recommend it to others.
