Practical NEW way to declutter
Revisado: 06-21-23
Short condensed view of how to tackle clutter. The parallel of the story of The Hare and the Tortoise was a good way to view two different methods. I found what I needed in the first half of the book and then it became difficult to listen because of the "uptalking". This seems to be common with narrators and it is hard to focus on the message when the intonation sounds like every sentence is a question. The message was worth continuing and so I would recommend this book despite that flaw.

Fun quirky short stories
Revisado: 05-05-22
I like anything set in Japan and usually stick to biographies and non-fiction. This was a pleasant twist to my usual reading pattern. The stories were short and enjoyable but most of all surprising. Some lessons similar to Aesops Fables but I never knew what to expect until I got to the end. A fun and imaginative escape into the lives of some interesting characters.

Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing, and he has to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is...elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs.

Humorous look at aging and eccentricities.
Revisado: 12-10-21
What a funny and humorous journey from the view point of an old man in a retirement setting. A different culture and different place than the USA but guess what---the quirks we have when we get old are universal. The antics of some of the residents and their view on life will keep you amused and give you hope. It makes you feel like each day counts and each day depends on your attitude and what you expect. Great fun to listen to.

Delightful story about end of life choices.
Revisado: 12-10-21
Wasn't sure what to expect but chose this because the sample had wonderful narration. Story was a realistic look at life as we age and the choices we make to prepare for the end. Was fun and delightful throughout and offered lessons in savoring what is in front of you. Great tidbits on how to prepare children and how honesty really is the best for young inquisitive minds. Happy ending despite a lump in my throat. Life doesn't always work out quite this smoothly but I found it a very hopeful and enjoyable journey with adorable characters.

Historia
We all follow our own path in life. At least, that's what we're told. In reality, many of us either do what is expected of us, or follow the invisible but well-worn paths that lead to what is culturally acceptable. For some, those paths are fine - even great. But they leave some of us feeling disconnected from ourselves and what we really want. When that discomfort finally outweighs the fear of trying something new, we're ready to opt out.

Lessons in looking forward to what CAN be....
Revisado: 07-17-21
I was very pleased with the narrator. I read the reviews AFTER finishing the book and was quite surprised at so many negative comments and some downright mean in nature. I often listen to books and will say it is "not my cup of tea" or "too much fluff" or "horrible pronunciation of foreign words" but try to keep the review short. I did not identify with the "drinking" problem that she had but my goodness---give her credit for cleaning up her act and taking on the task of being an author of TWO books and being willing to share her travel adventures in a positive tone. She describes what she encountered when opting out and emphasizes that it is individual to each person. She never pushes her way as the only way. Her parallel of hiking and choosing a different path than what society dictates was a clever way to present her story. The book was enjoyable and had enough practical information that I will share it with a friend who is choosing to go a different path than the norm. There is plenty of insight here and a FUN listen.

Learn and Laugh
Revisado: 09-03-19
Thank goodness Dan Harris narrated this himself. What a joy to listen to his voice---I felt like I was beside him on some of his excursions into enlightment. Some of the doubts and ridiculous thoughts he had racing thru his mind while trying to learn meditation made me laugh out loud. His honesty was pure fun but I also learned from his journey that it takes time to change and being open isn't always easy. Kudos to his wife that must have thought he was nuts!! This is great entertainment while learning about the path to being more focused and stop bouncing off walls with untamed mental chatter.

Historia
Shusaku Endo's novel Silence took visual artist Makoto Fujimura on a pilgrimage of grappling with the nature of art, the significance of pain, and his own cultural heritage. His artistic faith journey overlaps with Endo's as he uncovers deep layers of meaning in Japanese history and literature, expressed in art both past and present. He finds connections to how faith is lived amid trauma and glimpses of how the Gospel is conveyed in Christ-hidden cultures.

Nuggets of wisdom
Revisado: 09-03-19
Very interesting history of some of the persecution of Christians in Japan but beyond that it delves into "faith kept despite obstacles". The cultural aspect was conveyed with detail and stories brought it to life. Lots of philosophical nuggets of wisdom that are perks for any person regardless of faith or denomination. Perserverance in all things was the underlying theme. Very enjoyable narrator and good pronunciation. I love AUDIBLE versus reading because I can do things while listening but one of the downfalls frequently is the narrators butchering the language of the story. I have listened to books with a Japanese theme but many times the narrator was like nails on a chalkboard with how they pronounced even the easiest Japanese words. This narrator was a joy to listen to. I rarely listen to a book twice but this one is on my repeat list.

Good historical review of our teeth.
Revisado: 09-03-19
I saw this title and thought "am I really interested in 9 hours of info on teeth?". I am interested in dental health and how it relates to the mircrobiome and heart health. Yes, I am in the medical profession but not dental profession. So I decided to get this audible book and give it a chance. For someone in the dental profession it would be very interesting but probably not for the layperson. The narrator did a great job of keeping your attention, telling stories along with lots of historical facts about the rise of the dental profession and obstacles along the way. There was scant information connecting dental to heart health or microbiome. Most of all it shares some insight into the frustration of our insurance system and coverage for dental work. So if you want details like that it is great, otherwise if you are not medically inclined, it will put you to sleep.

Historia
In her late 20s, Cait Flanders found herself stuck in the consumerism cycle that grips so many of us: earn more, buy more, want more, rinse, repeat. Even after she worked her way out of nearly $30,000 of consumer debt, her old habits took hold again. When she realized that nothing she was doing or buying was making her happy - only keeping her from meeting her goals - she decided to set herself a challenge: she would not shop for an entire year. The Year of Less documents Cait's life for 12 months during which she bought only consumables.

Title is Misleading
Revisado: 12-23-18
I admire the courage of the author to break free from bad habits of shopping beyond her means and setting goals to achieve better habits. Hopefully she will encourage others faced with similar obstacles.. That being said, I thought the book would be more about downsizing and living with LESS material things. The author talks about giving her stuff away but it is primarily a journey through her struggles with low self-esteem, binge drinking, binge eating, compulsive shopping and bad relationships. I give her credit for overcoming but I couldn't identify with her choices. I was looking for ways to live with LESS and the title was deceptive. I finished the book but the narration was a struggle to listen to because of the "uptalking". Every other sentence has an uptone and sounds like a question. Even if the subject matter had been a perfect match I would have had a difficult time listening because of the constant rising intonation throughout her speech.
