Great narration of a classic
Revisado: 08-02-23
The story itself won't be to everyone's taste, being a unique blend of pulp-era sci-fi and Lovecraftian horror that gets off to a very slow start. But the narration is superb. I couldn't recommend this narrator more highly.

Historia
Hugh had been taught that, according to the ancient sacred writings, the Ship was on a voyage to faraway Centaurus. But he also understood this was just allegory for a voyage to spiritual perfection. Indeed, how could the Ship move, since its miles and miles of metal corridors were all there was of creation? Science knew that the Ship was all the universe, and as long as the sacred Converter was fed, the lights would continue to glow, the air would flow, and the Creator's Plan would be fulfilled.

A sci-fi classic, competently read
Revisado: 07-15-23
Re-reading this after a few decades, I'm glad to see that it has held up well. While not Heinlein's best novel, it's well worth reading. Graham Halstead's narration isn't exceptional, but it is competent and I have no complaints.

Historia
Who understood the risk inherent in the assumption of ever-rising real-estate prices, a risk compounded daily by the creation of those arcane, artificial securities loosely based on piles of doubtful mortgages? Michael Lewis turns the inquiry on its head to create a fresh, character-driven narrative brimming with indignation and dark humor, a fitting sequel to his number-one best-selling Liar’s Poker.

A gripping narrative
Revisado: 06-19-23
This is an excellent story, as long as you remember that it's a story—not an in-depth analysis of the origins of the financial crisis. (In particular, Lewis barely mentions the role of regulators and the media, and he leaves out entirely any discussion of the role that Congress, the Fed, and multiple presidents played in creating this catastrophe.) If you enjoyed the movie adaptation, then you should definitely also read the book, since the movie (which I did enjoy) not only left out many details but also collapsed and re-arranged the narrative to better fit the big screen. Jesse Boggs' workmanlike narration is excellent.

Historia
In their short history, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have gone through booms, busts, and internecine wars, recently reaching a market valuation of more than $2 trillion. The central promise of crypto endures—vast fortunes made from decentralized networks not controlled by any single entity and not yet regulated by many governments.

Not Great, But Still Valuable
Revisado: 10-04-22
While I wouldn't call it a great book, The Cryptopians is nevertheless a valuable addition to the growing literature on cryptocurrency and DeFi. Shin appears have distilled interviews and correspondence with a wide variety of players in the ecosystem into a more-or-less coherent account of the founding and early years of Ethereum. Shin's impartial treatment of the subject sometimes devolves into simple recitation of contradictory accounts without much to help the reader adjudicate between them. But even this tiresome "he said, she said" approach does eventually add up to an eye-opening portrait of the charlatans, toxic personalities, and shenanigans behind Ethereum's development. In the end, I could only marvel at how powerful the ideas behind Ethereum are to have allowed the project to survive years of spectacular mismanagement and greed.
The audiobook is read by Shin herself. While her voice is sometimes annoying, and her performance often overdramatic, I enjoyed her reading more than I would have enjoyed a performance by a professional voice actor who might have mispronounced names and jargon.

Jazz is a uniquely American art form, one of America's great contributions to not only musical culture, but world culture, with each generation of musicians applying new levels of creativity that take the music in unexpected directions that defy definition, category, and stagnation. Now you can learn the basics and history of this intoxicating genre in an eight-lecture series that is as free-flowing and original as the art form itself.

The virtue of this lecture series is that Messenger illustrates his points at the piano, sometimes with guest musicians.

Historia
This book covers bitcoin’s blocksize war, which was waged from August 2015 to November 2017. On the surface, the battle was about the amount of data allowed in each bitcoin block, however it exposed much deeper issues, such as who controls bitcoin’s protocol rules. It is not possible to cover every twist and turn in the labyrinthine conflict or all the arguments, but I have provided a chronology of the most significant events. This book explores some of the major characters in the conflict and includes coverage, from both the front lines and behind the scenes.

Revisado: 04-03-22
Not the definitive history I was hoping for, but still good for what it is. Bier recounts the debates of the time from his perspective, including first-hand accounts of some important events. He does make an effort to be fair to all points of view, and mostly succeeds.

A self-help book masquerading as a business book
Revisado: 11-19-20
From the title, I thought this book might have some useful information on business. Instead, it seems to be some sort of self-help book about affirmations, etc.
