Historia
Nobody knows the seedy underbelly of Las Vegas like Daniel Faust, a sorcerer for hire and ex-gangster who uses black magic and bullets to solve his clients' problems. When an old man comes seeking vengeance for his murdered granddaughter, what looks like a simple job quickly spirals out of control. Soon Daniel stands in the crossfire between a murderous porn director; a corrupt cop with a quick trigger finger; and his own former employer, a racket boss who isn't entirely human.

As a catholic I'm really not a fan of the trope demons are the good guys and angels are bad. Much harder to relate to this MC than Dresden or Verus so far. Other than that though it was pretty good story and I liked the voice acting. Reminded me often of Karl from Aquateen.

I can't quite put my finger on why, but author seems better than most. I was able to pay close attention without getting bored like I do in most stories

It got morally ambiguous
Revisado: 02-14-24
The "good guys" have gotten a bit too bloodthirsty to still be called good guys. If you like that kind of moral ambiguity you may like this. I liked it better when the story was mostly about Chris and Tanya fighting demons. Now enemy soldiers simply doing their job get no mercy.

I am completely enthralled
Revisado: 10-18-23
I'm not done with the book yet but I couldn't stop listening last night until I forced myself. What I had planned on as a 1 hour audible session turned into 3+. The characters are very interesting. The world is well designed and its close ties to modern class struggles makes it very relatable. The nobles are so loathsome I can't stand them, but in a good way bc it is making the story all the more captivating. Main character is very relatable in modern times where so many young men like me are stuck in jobs we don't really want, unsure what our life purpose is, and our hobbies seem to have no payoff or practical utility. I suspect the main character is going to find his hobby to be very rewarding in the end, which would be a good moral of the story. Looking forward to the philosophical implications of this series. Will it just be anti capitalist and high class or will it be more nuanced? Will we see nobles with high morals? Will the MC be perverted by power? All these questions make the series extremely interesting. Grats on a job well done, yet again, Jacka. Shoutouts to Shadow run, a snes game Jacka said inspired this. I also see some FInal Fantasy 6 influence, these are a lot like Espers.

Overlooked for every exciting case, Grimsby tires of being told to handle mundane magical troubles, and appropriates a case file intended for a friend. Alongside Leslie Mayflower, the temporarily unretired Huntsman, Grimsby aims to crack the case and discover the origin of a strange, unfinished ritual.

Mayflower is awesome. Voice acting was extremely well done. I'm not done yet but it has to be a 5/5 based on characters, pacing, and the fact I'm staying invested in the mystery. I hope Grimsby and Rain work out.

A bit morally troubling
Revisado: 10-16-23
I was thoroughly entertained. The old guy drinking was especially good. Fun creative world. I was extremely uncomfortable, however, with the human on human combat. Both female leads kill relatively innocent young men who were presumably drafted against their will. A tragedy. One of the females seemed to have no remorse at all. Thus, the good guys were not really all that good. It may have been Jim's intent to provoke the disgusted reaction I had though.

Don't make deals with the paranormal. They're better at it than you, and they never play fair. Paranormal investigator and soul-without-a-body Vincent Graves did just that - a deal made in desperation. Now it's coming back to bite him in the middle of a case. He has 57 hours to investigate a string of deaths involving people who've made some devilish bargains. Too bad devils don't deal in good faith.

Better than most UF but left me wanting more
Revisado: 10-13-23
I wanted more out of the series. More books, more mystery, more depth, more variety. The series wasn't long enough to really world build. Non-human species were, for the most part, not developed enough. The supernaturals at the ball just got tossed in there without nearly enough material to get to know and wonder about them. I got tired of Ortiz and just didn't like her in the end. Vince was a good time but a little too much like Dresden. Speaking of, the number of times someone "arched an eyebrow" was annoying bc I always saw that as sort of a Jim Butcher trademark. Also, Vince's nature made it very difficult to feel tension in combat because Church could theoretically just revive him over and over again. And like I said, I didn't care for Ortiz, so none of the main characters being in danger really mattered to me. I was in it for the mystery only. Having said all that, this beats 90% of the trash out there. Most urban fantasy doesn't even get me thinking enough to warrant a review, so props for that.

Characters had depth and behaved realistically. Main character is relatable and introduced well. Action pacing was pretty good. Antagonist seemed 2d at first but showed nuance by the end. Some plot twists predictable but others not. Just enough to keep you guessing. Good voice acting. The main chick got a little annoying, I can quite place my finger on why. The ending definitely provokes a desire to read the next book.

Fell for the female lead
Revisado: 09-28-23
Not done the book yet, but the blossoming love story appeals to my deepest yearnings for a genuine soul mate. I was able to completely escape reality into the fantasy of being Chris and finding Tanya. It is not yet clear what the antagonist of the plot is, however, so how that develops could impact my rating in future books. I'm a fan of the narrator after having heard him do Dead Man's Hand just earlier this week.
