Historia
Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.' LOLITA is the story of Humbert Humbert, poet and pervert, and his obsession with twelve-year-old Dolores Haze. Determined to possess his 'Lolita' both carnally and artistically, Humbert embarks on a disastrous courtship that can only end in tragedy.

I tried not to sympathise, I really did.
Revisado: 01-27-22
First of all, Jeremy Iron’s performance is devilishly brilliant. I cannot imagine that anyone could have done a better job. It was like watching the movie, but better. His voice and diction were part of what made you want to listen and care for this troubled character.
Phenomenal storytelling. Without giving the plot away, I want to say that the brilliance of this novel is the way beauty and ugliness, humour and sadness, tenderness and violence, exist in an inexplicable harmony. Nabokov’s words appear to bounce off this novel like a poem. Almost like you can see them dancing along, whirling and hypnotising, to a strange song that you fixate on and feel it’s rhythm.
This novel is a mushroom cloud: so beautiful and destructive. And it is nothing but sheer terror, but you can’t look away.
I managed to keep a clear head about the character, and I succeeded, right up until the final minutes of the book, where a pang of the deepest sadness, his sadness, that Gad need slowly building up over the course of this novel, overtook me.

Historia
Don Quixote, the world's first novel and by far the best-known book in Spanish literature, was originally intended by Cervantes as a satire on traditional popular ballads, yet he also parodied the romances of chivalry. By happy coincidence he produced one of the most entertaining adventure stories of all time and, in Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, two of the greatest characters in fiction.

A surprising pleasure
Revisado: 01-31-21
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. Except that it’s a very lengthy, very peculiar recount of the adventures of a mad man and his friend. I didn’t quite understand how the story could go on for so long without becoming boring or tedious. But it kept me thoroughly amused almost all the time. Something I was absolutely not expecting. I grew to love and respect the main character and care for their friends as I became more and more acquainted with them.
The reading was truly masterful. It was incredible the way the narrator managed to create such clear and discernible voices for each character. Especially since they we all so different and so numerous.

Historia
In Girls on the Edge, psychologist and physician Leonard Sax argues that many girls today have a brittle sense of self-they may look confident and strong on the outside, but they're fragile within. Sax offers the tools we need to help them become independent and confident women, and provides parents with practical tips on everything from helping their daughter limit her time on social media, to choosing a sport, to nurturing her spirit through female-centered activities.

Wonderfully helpful. Surprising.
Revisado: 11-04-20
This book was suggested to me by Dr Leonard Sax himself who took the time to answer a request for help from a complete stranger. Although I didn’t quite find the answer to the questions I was looking for, I found the answers to questions I didn’t know I had. Even about myself as an ex girl, now woman.
This book me want to be a mother of a daughter, something I’ve feared all my life, due in large to the relationship I had with my mother in the past.
The surprising parts were, firstly receiving so much insight from a man, about issues that seem so deeply female. And secondly, shaking my head at the spirituality chapter, and gradually seeing myself concerted to a new way of thinking. (Not converted to religion, mind you).
So I guess in a round about way, I found the answer to my question. And with a little, patience, time, and luck I’ll be able to put this newly found wisdom into practice.
Thank you.

Helpful ideas, but irritating delivery.
Revisado: 10-08-20
I found that the book has some great suggestions. But some of the example and descriptors are on the nose, floral in an irritating way.
Some of the suggestions are for “tips” are outdated. But it may have something to do with the time that the book was published that maybe predate certain technology, current popular customs, or communication styles.
