Historia
An iconic and controversial figure in American literature, Hunter S. Thompson displayed a brilliance that forever changed journalism. Thompson’s follow-up to The Proud Highway, this second volume of private, never-before-published letters spans the years 1968 through 1976. Addressed to such luminaries as Tom Wolfe, Kurt Vonnegut, and Jimmy Carter, this incisive collection showcases Thompson’s raw and starkly honest thoughts on a pivotal era in U.S. history.

Fierce narration and hard-hitting writing
Revisado: 10-24-19
"Frank Mankiewicz, McGovern's campaign manager, would often say in later years that the book, despite its embellishments, represented 'the least factual, most accurate account' of the election."

interesting concept, amateur writing
Revisado: 01-16-19
Good voice acting carries along a story written as if by the hand of an angry high schooler. Fun to have the perspective from the bad guys' point of view, but the angst-ridden characters never seem to grow or fulfill any kind of arc. Take a shot every time the plot stalls while the company's wizards duel each other.

Historia
First published in 1903, this groundbreaking work is a cornerstone of African American literary history and a foundational text in the field of sociology. In these fourteen essays, W. E. B. Du Bois introduces and explores the concept of “double-consciousness”—a term he uses to describe the experience of living as an African American and having a “sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others.” Though an examination of Black life in post-Civil War America, The Souls of Black Folk has had a lasting impact on civil rights and the discussion of race in the United States.

Well written, soulfully performed. I can almost imagine the author himself read it to me.

Since its release in 1949, The Hero with a Thousand Faces has influenced millions of readers by combining the insights of modern psychology with Joseph Campbell's revolutionary understanding of comparative mythology. In this book, Campbell outlines the Hero's Journey, a universal motif of adventure and transformation that runs through virtually all of the world's mythic traditions. He also explores the Cosmogonic Cycle, the mythic pattern of world creation and destruction.

Campbell buys into Freud a bit much, but his own message erased my doubts. Beautiful.

Gonzo journalism and a bit naive but beautiful
Revisado: 07-03-18
Embellished facsimiles of real people add luster to a fascinating philosophy of distance running. Excellent narration with every character given a distinct style of speech. Make sure to research the claims made in this book before adding them to your own regimen. A lovely appeal to humanity lies under its naive admiration of the primitive lifestyle.
