Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Not sure why this is a best seller
Revisado: 05-18-24
I thought this book was bizarre and hard to follow at times. There were so many random things going on at the same time. Several times I had to listen to a chapter again. I thought the author did a good job portraying the oppression of Jews and African Americans during this time in history. Otherwise, I didn't care for the book.

Historia
One week with one little girl—an angel, according to my staffing agency. Acting as the short-term nanny for a single dad should have been an easy way to make some extra cash. Until I show up for my first day and face off with a demon disguised as a seven-year-old girl wearing a red tutu and matching glitter slippers. Oh, and her father? My temporary boss? Maddox Holiday. The same Maddox Holiday I crushed on in high school. The same Maddox Holiday who didn’t even know I existed.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Why is this the best seller?
Revisado: 12-23-21
I picked this book because it was a bestseller and because Tom Hanks was the narrator. I was very disappointed. The story overall was kind of boring.

Pain and suffering
Revisado: 09-21-21
Well, if you aren’t depressed now, you will be by the end of the book. The story was so good that I couldn’t stop listening but I kept thinking the main characters would catch a break. I kept thinking it word get better. No, only despair, misery and death. Very depressing tear jerker.
