Historia
A comprehensive history of Philadelphia from the region’s original Lenape inhabitants to the myriad of residents in the twenty-first century. In Philadelphia: A Narrative History, Paul Kahan presents a comprehensive portrait of the city, from the region’s original Lenape inhabitants to the myriad of residents in the twenty-first century. As any history of Philadelphia should, this book chronicles the people and places that make the city unique: from Independence Hall to Eastern State Penitentiary, Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross to Cecil B. Moore and Cherelle Parker.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 03-24-25
I bought the audiobook to learn more about the history of Philadelphia where I grew up and have spent a good part of my 70 years. I found the first half to be pretty interesting albeit not particularly well written as I learned a lot about how the city grew over the years and the population evolved. But the last couple of chapters were terrible and so one stilted it made me wonder about the rest of the book.

Historia
For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

Historia
In 1966 Fan Shen, a newly minted Red Guard, plunged happily into China's Cultural Revolution. Disillusionment soon followed, then turned to disgust and fear when Shen discovered that his compatriots had tortured and murdered a doctor whose house he'd helped raid and whose beautiful daughter he secretly adored. A story of coming of age in the midst of monumental historical upheaval, Shen's Gang of One is more than a memoir of one young man's harrowing experience during a time of terror.

I have read many books about life in Communist China and North Korea and this is by far my favorite. Like the others the story is amazing but this book is written with such heart and humor it is a must read.

Historia
At the end of 2008, Ford Motor Company was just months away from running out of cash. With the auto industry careening toward ruin, Congress offered all three Detroit automakers a bailout. General Motors and Chrysler grabbed the taxpayer lifeline, but Ford decided to save itself. Under the leadership of charismatic CEO Alan Mulally, Ford had already put together a bold plan to unify its divided global operations, transform its lackluster product lineup, and overcome a dysfunctional culture of infighting, backstabbing, and excuses.

A bit too much Mulally worship but otherwise a great read
Revisado: 03-06-18
While Bill Ford and Alan Mulally deserve a lot of credit for their leadership, the book goes overboard in worshiping Alan Mulally which unfortunately undermines the authors credibility. I understand as an author you can’t bite the had that feeds you or else you can’t get access to tell a compelling story but this reads like Mulally’s mom wrote it. Otherwise a great read

Historia
In Crash Course, Ingrassia answers the big questions: Was Detroit's self-destruction inevitable? What were the key turning points? Why did Japanese automakers manage American workers better than the American companies themselves? Ingrassia also describes dysfunctional corporate cultures (even as GM's market share plunged, the company continued business as usual) and Detroit's perverse system of "inverse layoffs" (which allowed union members to invoke seniority to avoid work).

Excellent balanced history of the Big 3 undoing
Revisado: 03-06-18
Could only have been written by someone who followed the Big 3 over a long period and could recognize fact from fiction. I worked for one of the Big 3 for few years in the 80s and invested in parts suppliers in the 90s so I know many of the principles in the book and the author really nailed it. Highly recommend

Historia
In Unholy Alliance, Jay Sekulow and the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) tackle radical Islam head on. They expose the attempts by fundamentalist Muslims - both in the US and abroad - to destroy our legal system in favor of a system that would destroy our essential liberties. They bring attention to terrorism in today's world and reflect on the recent Paris and San Bernadino attacks as well as Russia, Syria, Iran, and continuous threats to our nation.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-25-18
Another example of why authors should not read their books. Poorly read
The content is unfortunately not much better. More an oped piece than an examination of the subject
Unfortunately keep reading expecting it would get better and so can’t return it

Historia
Kevin Mitnick was the most elusive computer break-in artist in history. He accessed computers and networks at the world’s biggest companies—and however fast the authorities were, Mitnick was faster, sprinting through phone switches, computer systems, and cellular networks. He spent years skipping through cyberspace, always three steps ahead and labeled unstoppable.

nothing special here
Revisado: 04-27-13
What did you like best about Ghost in the Wires? What did you like least?
Ok story but nothing really special about the book ... Mitnick is somewhat delusional and has a bit of a persecution complex so it is hard to get behind the Mitnick as a victim theme.... It is also difficult to believe that someone supposedly as smart and clever as he portrays himself could make as many boneheaded mistakes as he did

Historia
Roger Lowenstein, the bestselling author of Buffett, captures Long-Term's roller-coaster ride in gripping detail. Drawing on confidential internal memos and interviews with dozens of key players, Lowenstein crafts a story that reads like a first-rate thriller from beginning to end. He explains not just how the fund made and lost its money, but what it was about the personalities of Long-Term's partners, the arrogance of their mathematical certainties, and the late-nineties culture of Wall Street that made it all possible.

Historia
In 2006, hedge fund manager John Paulson realized something few others suspected - that the housing market and the value of subprime mortgages were grossly inflated and headed for a major fall. Paulson's background was in mergers and acquisitions, however, and he knew little about real estate or how to wager against housing. He had spent a career as an also-ran on Wall Street. But Paulson was convinced this was his chance to make his mark. He just wasn't sure how to do it. Colleagues at investment banks scoffed at him and investors dismissed him.
