Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Terrifying and encouraging by turns
Revisado: 10-26-23
Enjoyed the performance, elocution, and pacing of the narrator. The story seems further evidence there is nothing new under the sun. People in the US have been working against their own interests since Revolutionary days. I appreciate the opportunity to know a bit about this group of mid-century heroes.

Freddy leads a life of little responsibility. His mother is dead, his sisters are far-flung across the globe, and he can't quite work up enough motivation to find himself a girlfriend. But his memory-challenged grandmother lives in a nursing home nearby, and Freddy visits her often, simultaneously cherishing and hating the time he spends with the grandmother he always adored, who is now a ghost of her former self. When another elderly woman is murdered in the nursing home, Freddy panics.

Refreshingly absurd
Revisado: 07-03-23
Never read anything with a glass blower as the central character. Points for novelty! Very much enjoyed the cast of oddball characters and the flawed hero aspect. Narration was solid, expressing the “stoner” vibe nicely. An easy listen with a handful of serious chuckles and a sprinkle of “awww” sweetness. Extra points for spot on description of the institutional smell of memory care. I encourage this one as a pallet cleanser.

Fantastic. Devastating.
Mr Smith’s prose and performance struck a nerve. As a country, the USA still has a way to go in the great freedom experiment. More thoughtful reflection! More discourse! More works of this magnitude!

Historia
The famous journalist and author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich documents his front row seat at the pivotal events leading up to World War II. In the second of a three-volume series, William L. Shirer tells the story of his own eventful life, detailing the most notable moments of his career as a journalist stationed in Germany during the rise of the Third Reich. Shirer was there while Hitler celebrated his new domination of Germany, unleashed the Blitzkrieg on Poland, and began the conflict that would come to be known as World War II.

Revisado: 12-29-21
While long and at times, overwhelming with names and dates, this is an amazing memoir offering an American newsman's perspective of Nazi Germany from within Germany at the time of Hitler's rise. The detail and anecdotes are superb. Grover Gardner is flawless as always!

Charming surprise!
Revisado: 05-24-21
What a find! As an inveterate word snob, I was delighted to come across this little gem. I gobbled it up in one sitting! So many precious words! The story has just enough intrigue to move things along without upsetting the library air. There are happy little surprises and a marvelously startling turn. The narration is pleasing to the ear, with precise diction and excellent phrasing. Both actors gave no hint they were "reading." Altogether, a treat!

Historia
A mysterious virus has infiltrated the good people of Lake Wobegon, transmitted via unpasteurized cheese made by a Norwegian bachelor farmer, the effect of which is episodic loss of social inhibition. Mayor Alice, Father Wilmer, Pastor Liz, the Bunsens and Krebsbachs, formerly taciturn elders, burst into political rants, inappropriate confessions, and rhapsodic proclamations, while their teenagers watch in amazement. Meanwhile, a wealthy outsider is buying up farmland for a Keep America Truckin' motorway and amusement park.

Historia
'Between the Stops is a sort of a memoir, my sort. It's about a bus trip really, because it's my view from the Number 12 bus (mostly top deck, the seat at the front on the right), a double-decker that plies its way from Dulwich, in South East London, where I was living, to where I sometimes work - at the BBC, in the heart of the capital. It's not a sensible way to write a memoir at all, probably, but it's the way things pop into your head as you travel, so it's my way'.

Historia
Welcome to the Black Triangle, New York's decadent district of opium dens, gambling casinos, and back-room abortions. The queen of this unsavory neighborhood is Black Lena Shanks, whose family leads a ring of female criminals - women skilled in the art of cruelty. Only a few blocks away, amidst the elegant mansions and lily-white reputations of Gramercy Park and Washington Square, lives Judge James Stallworth. On a crusade to crush Lena's evil empire, the judge has sentenced three of her family members to death. And now she wants revenge.

Wonderfully wicked!
Revisado: 05-12-20
I am not usually one to root for the bad guy but the characters in this volume make one question precisely who IS the bad guy. This is a deliciously dark tale of revenge, community, and familial love. Narration is sold and sympathetic to the story. Not for everyone (or the faint of heart), I cannot recommend highly enough this walk on the wild side of NYC, circa 1882.

Historia
Can a young war correspondent find herself and follow her heart? In this work of historical fiction, 20-something Annabella “Annie” March arrives in France in 1944 intending to write about the war. Soon, however, Annie begins to distance herself from her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-rival - the great Martha Gellhorn - and Gellhorn’s larger-than-life husband, the novelist Ernest Hemingway. She turns to photography in the hopes of making her own name and, to her delight, discovers that images come more easily than words.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 03-16-20
Being a sucker for WWII-based fiction, this was an easy choice for me. The story draws the reader/listener into the gritty world if war time Europe. The narration is clear and easy to follow. I will never be a fan of narrators attempting to change voices for characters, but it is less jarring in this volume than others. An enjoyable afternoon's listen!
