From start to finish, Clare's story caught my attention. I thoroughly enjoyed the insights into the firefighting profession, firehouse, hierarchy, command structure, training, and fires themselves. Clare also did an excellent job with the narration. Superb book and well worth reading.

Superb. I loved listening to every one of these lectures. Each delivered a load of information in a listenable story of people, lives, experiences and discovery. I would gladly listen to another dozen lectures.

I've read all of Galbraith's books - paper or Audible. I've done three or four as audio books and I've decided that Audible is my preference because the narrator Robert Glenister is incredible. He brings so much more life and reality to the characters than Galbraith's words alone convery. I look forward to the next book and another 30-odd hours of listening.

The story line was weak....think Steinhoff!. The dialogue between the main characters was totally inane. The narrator's accents made them sound like a bunch of zombies. Terrible narration.

I already had a keen interest in fungi when I started listening to this book but now my interest (or obsession) has increased even more.
Narration was just right, content was superb and the volume of interesting snippets, stories, reflections and scientific research kept my attention throughout. This is one I would listen to again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and it's historical setting. You'll find yourself rooting for these children - that something will work out in their favour. It is a good listen that is well narrated.

I loved the story concept where the main character Alice loses memory of the past 10 years of her life. It made me think of myself and who I was then, who I am now and everything inbetween.

This book is about this but also about family, busy lives, juggling activities and relationships, forgiveness and love.

Narration is superb. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale.

This story is well narrated and it flows smoothly. Set near the end of the World War II in London and Paris (two characters) , and two years later in New York (one character), each chapter alternates between the characters to build the story. This book is perfectly entertaining listen.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd most definitely recommend this audiobook - and I have. This is a diary-style story that had me captivated from the start. The story is simple and back-to-nature. It tells of building, making and creating a home in the Alaskan wilderness - that's something few of us have the skills to do nor the opportunity. In our world of mostly rush-rush-rush and internet and tv and non-stop communication, this story is about a place and time where nature sets the pace. I found the content to be interesting, informative and, mostly, peaceful.

What did you like best about this story?

From listening to accounts of number of logs chopped to tools being sharpened, berries picked, wolves and caribou and sheep spotted to thickness of the ice as winter set in and groceries delivered by his friend in the plane... Writing this review, these things seem so boring and mundane but it so isn't. The narration is spot-on and the voice transported me to Alaska. I felt involved in the Richard Proenneke's daily tasks of building his cabin, paddling on the lake, changing seasons, watching the wildlife and trekking around the area. If you're into the outdoors, nature, wilderness and living off the land - you'll enjoy this story.

What about Norman Dietz’s performance did you like?

Norman's voice, tone and accent so suited the author that, for me, he became Richard Proenneke. Norman beautifully brought through Richard's feelings of achievement and self satisfaction with tasks completed as well as wonder for the environment, sensitivity and fascination for the wildlife and the pleasure and appreciation of having had this opportunity to spend more than a year living in the Alaskan wilds.
