Historia
Inara Erickson is exploring her deceased aunt's island estate when she finds an elaborately stitched piece of fabric hidden in the house. As she peels back layer upon layer of the secrets it holds, Inara's life becomes interwoven with that of Mei Lein, a young Chinese girl mysteriously driven from her home a century before. Through the stories Mei Lein tells in silk, Inara uncovers a tragic truth that will shake her family to its core - and force her to make an impossible choice.

could have been so much more..
Revisado: 09-03-24
The basic premise of the story was solid. This story could have been so much more. Going backwards from 1890s towards to the grandmother's side and her story would have been so much more interesting. The story lacked Depth and Color. Conversations were predictable and thin. Could have been colorful, savory and more descriptive. ugh. With each back and forth in time, it just got so predictable and ridiculous. I kept waiting for the good part. If the present day girl was part Chinese, THAT would have been awesome. oh well, it was a good time waster while driving.

Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

Ridiculous & Thin
Revisado: 04-14-22
I don't know if the story was bad or the narrator was not a good fit for this book... either way I kept waiting for it to get better the only reason I kept listening was because I was out of credits. It's all over the place, no depth and a ridiculous story. hummmpffff

Historia
Olivia's marriage to an African-American man was unacceptable to her mother Emma, Southern-bred descendant of prominent South Carolina slaveholders. Olivia assumed that bigotry was the product of her mother's loyalty to long-dead relatives, an allegiance to maintain the family's white blood line. After Emma's death though, Olivia finds a letter and an old journal among her belongings.

a white man narrates a black woman..?
Revisado: 11-10-21
why an earth would you have a white man (sounds like) narrator for black women and white woman...began preposterously. Struggle due to ridiculous narrator. written View from white perspective which made the story trite and unbelievable. No emotion conveyed. this could have been so much better, but missed the mark altogether. no details no scenery no emotion...zzzzzz

similar to 'Someone Knows My Name'
Revisado: 07-12-21
The beginning of the book was so similar to the book Someone Knows My Name/The Book of Negroes that I almost stopped at chapter 1. Overall the story was interesting enough and I can see why this may be appropriate for young adults.

Historia
In 1804, shortly before the Caribbean island of Saint Domingue is renamed Haiti, a group of women gather to bury a stillborn baby. Led by a lesbian healer and midwife named Mer, the women's lamentations inadvertently release the dead infant's "unused vitality" to draw Ezili - the Afro-Caribbean goddess of sexual desire and love - into the physical world. As Ezili explores her newfound powers, she travels across time and space to inhabit the midwife's body - as well as those of Jeanne, a mixed-race dancer and the mistress of Charles Baudelaire living in 1880s Paris, and Meritet.
