Seemed ok until…

Seemed like the plot was moving along, keeping me intrigued despite the endless and exhausting descriptions - similes and metaphors in every blessed sentence, but then it took a turn for the bizarre and became completely unbelievable. Thinking of stopping here but I’ve devoted nearly 9 hours of my life to this so I feel like I should see it through. If I finish this it will be purely due to the time I’ve invested in this story. We’re pretty far into left field at this point.

Wasn’t sure at first if it was the slow pace of the plot or the narrator’s over-enunciation of every. single. word. It’s both. Listening for free with Kindle unlimited so I may just scrap it if it doesn’t turn around soon. Other reviews don’t leave much hope though.

Wretched pronunciations!

Liked this better than the first in the series which I couldn’t complete. Interesting plot with sometimes stiff writing which may be the translation, but can no one take 10 minutes to teach the narrator how to pronounce Finnish names properly? Or just hire a Finnish narrator maybe? The mispronunciations are so horrible it’s incredibly distracting. Sounds like a typical American who’s too arrogant to learn foreign names. Doesn’t it bother the author that her character’s names are getting butchered?!? Would love to hear this series read by a Finnish narrator!

Narrator made this impossible to complete

I was excited to find a Finnish crime series with so many titles to keep me listening through the winter waiting for another season of Bordertown -I love stories that connect me to my family in Finland. It’s possible that some of the issues are translation problems, but this narrator is impossible to listen to. I agree with other reviews that she sounded like the text-to-audio narration but a few chapters in she seemed to loosen up a bit. But the pronunciation of names is ridiculous. I’ve listened to other Nordic novels narrated with excellent pronunciation of people and place names. This was just lazy reading on top of a storyline that was so wildly implausible that I couldn’t get past chapter 4. Sad to let this whole series go, but there’s so much better available in this genre.

A few issues…

Have enjoyed Burton’s books, but this one was a little rough. Female lead character was a stereotypical tough girl who whined every time she couldn’t control every detail. The narrator’s voice for Jordan made everything worse. Boston accent was so bad it was horribly distracting. Don’t know who would find it believable. Sounded like a speech impediment instead of an accent. Male narrator was better. If you can’t nail the accent, don’t try. Ruined the story for me.

Narration destroys any chance of enjoyment

Narration is completely devoid of any inflection. All voices are the same and it sounds like the characters are all so heavily medicated that their affects are all utterly flat. Worse, you constantly hear the narrator swallowing and licking her lips. The whole thing sounds wet and flat. I honestly lost track of the storyline with all the distractions in the narration. It was a shame after I thoroughly enjoyed the last Luanne Rice Audible book I listened to. Definitely won’t be able to stomach another by this narrator.
