Different view of SHTF
Revisado: 11-18-24
Good book. There is a lot of swearing as others pointed out, but it's mostly from one rough character. While his personality maybe could have been conveyed without it, to be fair it does provide a realistic portrayal of that type of person. There's also some graphic descriptions of injuries/deaths, but they're also realistic, not like the author is reveling in them like some action books. There's not a lot of useful survival type info in this book, but it is an excellent story with a different view of SHTF which is a nice change. Good dialogue and relatable characters. Going on to Book 2.

It’s a doozy of a bad day for Beverly Diamond when she catches her husband, Larry, in a compromising position with his secretary. What’s a DC suburban wife to do with a soon-to-be ex, two young kids, and no degree or financial support in 1962? Beat the louse at his own game, that’s what.

I have yet to listen to one of the author's books that I didn't enjoy. She's one of the few authors I automatically purchase new releases from. This book was fun. It was also interesting and educational without being preachy or politically divisive. Relatable characters and excellent storyline. Also, the affair part was handled tactfully, no graphic descriptions, which was very much appreciated! Definitely recommend!

Only made it to chapter 26 before I got sick of hearing constant unnecessary talk about relationships, some between adults and minors. That along with the constant swearing and more importantly the complete lack of any useful information makes it a waste of time to go any further. I can suffer through a lot in a book if I can learn something, but this had nothing so far. If you want a good end of the world high schoolers story definitely check out the Stranded series by Theresa Shaver.

One of the Best!
Revisado: 05-22-24
Hard to believe this is the author's debut book! I've read countless SHTF books, and this is now one of my favorites along with Odd Billy Todd, The Last Tribe, and Patriots. This book balanced action, character development and educating the reader well, and the addition of the psychological processes people go through in a crisis was great. Women were treated as intelligent human beings who had something to contribute not stereotypes as in a lot of prepper novels. One of my favorite parts was how the author made a point to examine the enemy's motives. Truly masterful thinking. Can't wait to read the next book!

A good series worth continuing
Revisado: 01-03-24
This was a good book. It's not quite an Odd Billy Todd level book (which you should definitely read if you haven't), but from a woman reader's perspective, it's definitely one of the better series. Good storyline, good dialog, and action but not excessive amounts. It's also not overly graphic which is really nice. The characters sound like real people, and the author writes in a way that allows you to learn from both their successes and their failures. It's also nice to see the women portrayed as having value above just what they look like or what they can do for the men in the book. The women aren't treated as respectfully as in some of the top tier prepper books (fewer comments by the MC about how they look in yoga pants and how hot they are would improve it), but they're written as competent and intelligent and treated as such for the most part.

One second was all it took to erase Frank's dreams. New home. New car. New retirement. Stolen by the EMP. It gets worse. Frank's neighbors failed to prepare at all, so it falls on him to keep them alive. He starts easy: stockpile food, water, and guns. Disaster lessons he'd picked up reading books about the end of the world.

Possibly a female-friendly prepper series?
Revisado: 12-04-23
Good survivalist read, especially since it's not super heavy on the macho man hero mentality. The author writes a realistic story that's easy to want to stick with until the end. It treads on the edge of middle age man going after younger woman storyline, but I'm going to read the next book because that relationship didn't cross the creepy old man or women throwing themselves at the hero line. It comes pretty close, but since there wasn't graphic violence or other explicit type scenes I was able to overlook it because I did really like the rest of storyline. As a woman it's so hard to find SHTF books that don't center on those themes and instead actually have normal people-type characters that teach you useful things, so it's worth buying the next in the series and hoping it stays female-friendly.

Surprised Me
Revisado: 08-06-23
I expected a light, fun read based off the book description and the reviews, but it turned out to be a surprisingly profound look into how we see and judge ourselves and others in relationships. A listen that's not too heavy and not too light. Would recommend.

In the wake of her parents’ death, Aretha, a habitually single Black lawyer, has had only one obsession in life—success—until she falls for Aaron, a coffee entrepreneur. Moving into his Brooklyn brownstone to live along with his Hurricane Sandy-traumatized, illegal-gun-stockpiling, optimized-soy-protein-eating, bunker-building roommates, Aretha finds that her dreams of making partner are slipping away, replaced by an underground world, one of selling guns and training for a doomsday that’s maybe just around the corner.

Not a true survivalist story
Revisado: 06-11-23
This was not what most would consider a good representation of the post-apocalyptic/survivalist genre. I got most of the way through it, but couldn't fully finish it. There was nothing really "survivalist" about it, and I got tired of waiting for the story to go somewhere or for the characters to learn something or become better people. There was a partially accurate portrayal of the reason people do become preppers, but the characters were more driven by fear than by a level-headed desire to be prepared as most preppers actually are. This is definitely not a good representation of any preparedness-type person I've ever met-not even close. They aren't usually driven by fear, just a sense of responsibility to take care of themselves and their family/community rather than expect someone else to do it for them if things ever go sideways. This book did not portray the prepper mindset in an accurate way at all, at least not any group that I've ever met or even heard of. It was also a pretty vulgar and dark book, really showing the worst sides of each of the character's human natures. It may actually be the worst book I've ever tried to read, because it was just so far off base from what I expected and from what I know of the type of people that were being described. I'm sure there are those types of "preppers" out there, but they're not the majority, and they're definitely not the ones people should believe are an accurate reflection of the prepper community as a whole. Overall, choose a different book if you actually want to read a realistic survivalist book or anything remotely positive for that matter.

Interesting, encouraging, and thought-provoking
Revisado: 12-22-22
After listening to this book, I was shocked to go back and see it had such a small number of ratings so far. I almost never leave written reviews, probably only one for every hundred books or so since my illness makes it hard to do, but this book deserves it. It's partially memoir, partially self-help, and 100% thought-provoking and encouraging. This author put words to my confused feelings surrounding Christianity and made me feel less alone in my own crisis of faith story. He gave me a place to start from in developing my own words to explain to others my switch from having religion to having faith. If you have any feelings of uncertainty, anger, sadness towards religion, I would highly recommend this book. If you feel you're just sleepwalking through life, stuck on a path you didn't want or things didn't turn out how you thought they would, this is a great read. It will give you a foothold to start thinking about if/what you might do differently but not at all in an overwhelming or discouraging way. It may be the perfect balance of light and deep I've ever read in a book. It's an easy, interesting read with excellent narration. I really hope this author will write another book.

Witty, honest truth about problems in Christianity
Revisado: 11-21-18
If you're in the "what in the hell is wrong with religion or is it me? " frame of mind, this is the book for you. She's so real about her life, her faith, and the evolution of them both over time, as well as how Christianity often promotes good deeds that don't always turn out to do the good intended. Often whether by naiveté or purposeful deception, our thoughtful help makes things worse because we don't take the time to understand the differences between us and those we are trying to help. It's not Christian-bashing, but it is straight forward and in your face honest about the issues most Christians are too uncomfortable to discuss. But they must be discussed, and she uses her wit, sarcasm and humility in equal doses to open the door for the conversations. The narrator does a good job and seems to fit the personality of the book. Overall highly recommended. It will make you think, laugh and maybe feel a little better about problems with Christianity. Disclaimer: It has a fair amount of swearing, but it's the kind that fits the situation. The kind that comes from living a real life with bad, frustrating things in it, and not just the "swearing just because I can" type.
