Historia
Thaddeus Stevens was among the first to see the Civil War as an opportunity for a second American revolution - a chance to remake the country as a genuine multiracial democracy. As one of the foremost abolitionists in Congress in the years leading up to the war, he was a leader of the young Republican Party’s radical wing, fighting for anti-slavery and anti-racist policies long before party colleagues like Abraham Lincoln endorsed them. These policies - including welcoming black men into the Union’s armies - would prove crucial to the Union war effort.

A fighter for liberty
Revisado: 04-01-22
I loved this tale about a great defender of liberty. The abolition of slavery and the advancement of human equality ultimately required both a cool moral pragmatist like Abraham Lincoln as well as a hot, passionate revolutionary like Thaddeus Stevens. Stevens drove the cause with his fierce, unrelenting advocacy and Lincoln helped achieved its partial victory by his cool assessment of what is possible at a given time.

In this thought-provoking audiobook, Dr. Steve Turley argues that there is in fact two revolutions concurrently taking place: a demographic revolution and a political revolution, both of which suggest a significant conservative Christian resurgence.

Revisado: 05-01-21
Dr. Turley makes one hopeful that those foundational traditions which made western civilization great are in the process of being recovered and are not irretrievably lost. I hope he is right.

Brion McClanahan, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Founding Fathers and The Founding Fathers' Guide to the Constitution, will surprise listeners with his list, which he supports with exhaustive and entertaining evidence.

An unconditional rating
Revisado: 12-15-18
Traditionally presidential ratings systems place the activist presidents such as Lincoln, the two Roosevelt's, Wilson, etc at the top of list. Under most systems the further a president is from the constitution as the founders envisioned it the greater a president you are. But, this book is different. The more a president adheres to the constitution the greater he is. Consequently, McClanahan's list is upsides down from most presidential list . He place the usual low riders John Tyler, Grover Cleveland, Calvin Coolidge ,etc . at the top and the usual presidential gods at the bottom. Unfortunately he doesn't evaluate all of the presidents, only a few and I would like to see him do a full fledged evaluation of all of our chief executives from Washington to Trump, but this book is a good first step.

Historia
From an eminent scholar of the American South, the first full-scale biography of Thomas Jefferson since 1970. Not since Merrill Peterson's Thomas Jefferson and the New Nation has a scholar attempted to write a comprehensive biography of the most complex Founding Father. In Jefferson, John B. Boles plumbs every facet of Thomas Jefferson's life, all while situating him amid the sweeping upheaval of his times. We meet Jefferson the politician and political thinker - as well as Jefferson the architect, scientist, bibliophile, paleontologist, musician, and gourmet.

Jefferson
Revisado: 09-10-18
Boles' excellent biography humanize the sage of Monticello. Boles shows us a Thomas Jefferson who is both a great and brilliant man ,an idealist and reformer ,but also a flawed, if well being human being. This book will not satisfy the Jefferson haters who insist that historical figures must be perfect but to fair minded readers John Boles ' book acquaint us with a man well worth knowing and admiring.

A surprising love story
Revisado: 08-23-18
A leisurely tale of love and religion where things do not proceed predictably. It is a love story, but one where it is unclear who is to be in love. This last point is important in as much as we all knew quite early in our reading that Darcy was for Elizabeth and that Jane was for Rochester or Romeo was tragically for Juliet. However, I defy anyone to know early in the book who are the lovers. George Eliot displayed a modern degree of religious tolerance and political farsightedness.
