Historia
As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

What a story!
Revisado: 02-11-25
There was intense love, hatred, misunderstanding and so much life in between. This story is incredible and had some great twists. I love when a book makes you wonder how you would handle a situation if you were in a character’s shoes. This one did NOT disappoint.

Bob Marley's life is the stuff of legend. Raised in the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, Marley (1945-1981) wrote songs that inspired millions. So Much Things to Say tells Marley's life story like never before. Roger Steffens traveled with the Wailers and interviewed Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer extensively. Now, drawing on 40 years of intimate interviews with band members, family, lovers, and confidants - many speaking publicly for the first time - Steffens crafts a riveting oral history depicting Marley's life.

An honest, but not pretty picture
Revisado: 03-04-24
The author brings together many speakers, musicians and personalities to recount the life of Bob Marley. At times it is raw and unpleasant but definitely a great story. I love that the book is an honest, sometimes harsh account of an actual person. Definitely worth the time.

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

A beautiful, ugly look at America
Revisado: 03-16-23
Simultaneously beautiful and ugly, an internal reflection on America. Part story, part epic poem, part love letter and call to action. Coates captures the grim reality of life in America for people of color and doesn’t soften any of jagged edges. Thought provoking and well worth the time.

Historia
When Michael K. Williams died on September 6, 2021, he left behind a career as one of the most electrifying actors of his generation. From his star turn as Omar Little in The Wire to Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire to Emmy-nominated roles in HBO’s The Night Of and Lovecraft Country, Williams inhabited a slew of indelible roles that he portrayed with a rawness and vulnerability that leapt off the screen.

A true memoir
Revisado: 11-07-22
A raw and real telling of a man who died way too soon. I knew his work but I wasn’t very familiar with his story. Here we learn about the generational curse of substance abuse, the effects of absent parents, drugs and criminalizing an entire generation. From a child who was trying to find his place in the world under his mother’s harsh, stifling love to a young man who expressed himself through the arts while battling addiction to becoming an advocate for social reform.
I didn’t expect to be taken on such an amazing journey.

I also loved listening to the ice skating references.

A beautiful, touching and at times funny story
Revisado: 07-28-22
What a beautiful a and moving story of Liu’s family origin and how he began acting. Any immigrant’s child can relate to hearing about the sacrifices your parents made just to provide for you and this story is no different. You also have the tale of his awkward and sometimes painful youth and underachieving college years. Loved it!

Beautiful, painful and inspiring
Revisado: 06-07-22
I didn’t know much of the author’s upbringing when I picked this up but of course like all of her work I was immediately drawn in.
Such a painful, hectic youth that forced her to learn to survive. What we have seen poured out on stage, television and film is explored here and several passages of this book made me reflect on and question my life and choices.
Just read it!
Auntie Viola, thank you for telling your story!

Revisado: 05-30-22
As a native Philadelphian I could relate to the Jersey-girl honesty. I liked Michelle Buteau before I listened to this book but now I LOVE her!
Between the family history, tales of puberty’s sudden arrival, dating horrors, dental nightmares, trying to find her way professionally and navigating the road to becoming a parent I was hooked. What a great story and there are some excellent life lessons here.
