Very religious story
Revisado: 10-13-24
Ruth was a product of its time. So to say it didn’t age well is rather unfair. There was definite sympathy from the author toward her main character. But no actual blame on the actions of the men. By today’s standards it would have been a statutory rape situation.
At the minimum a man in his thirties groomed a 16 year old, taking advantage of her and then taking zero responsibilities for his actions.
The book lays all of this on the teenagers loose morals. She is fallen and that is that. Redemption is possible only by her knowing her place, understanding her enormous sin, and being forever pious, obedient and good.
Truly she is beyond good to saintly. The best moments are when Ruth meets her former lover/betrayer/abuser and tells him to go F himself. Ok. She does not say that. Except she also rather does. It’s a cheerable moment.
The worst moment is her martyrdom at the end. Hard for the reader because essentially the abuser gets a second chance at her. We think her safe. But not so much.
It’s frightening because around the world women are still treated in this heinous hypocritical manner. If only this tale lived as a window in history only. But double standards abound.
Narration is superb. No negatives there.
Just be aware how very religious this book is. It’s not for everyone.

Freedom to is a way to reinvent the paradigm
Revisado: 09-24-24
Very well thought out premise that made me rethink many prior ideas. Worth reading a few times to get all the nuance. Well worth the time to dedicate and feel like a great deal was learned. And so that you can follow a gameplay that values the many over the few or the one. Solidarity over loneliness. Values over apathy or nihilism. Human rights over free market pipedreams and inequity so deep it’ll take centuries to pull it out. Health care. Basic income. Voting for every citizen. I want to live with freedom to live my values, with government taking taxes from billionaires to lift us all up. And lastly an education system that’s quality and obsessed with truth. So we can all have the freedom to thrive.

Beware Cliffhanger Ending
Revisado: 08-30-24
Excellent writing and outstanding narration. Not usually into quite that much of a cliffhanger. But world building and character development was excellent. Will definitely read next book as otherwise there is no ending. Still highly recommend as a lovely fantasy romance.

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Historia
Preble Jefferson can see five seconds into the future. Otherwise, he lives an ordinary life. But when a confrontation with a cop on a New York City subway goes tragically wrong, those seconds give Preble the chance to dodge a bullet, causing another man to die in his place. Government agencies become aware of Preble's gift, a manhunt ensues, and their ambitions shift from law enforcement to military R&D. Preble will do whatever it takes to protect his family, but as events spiral out of control, he must weigh the cost of his gift against the loss of his humanity.

Whoa. A very wild, thinky ride!
Revisado: 05-27-24
I just finished and reeling a bit. This book starts with a virtual bullet and doesn’t give you much time to catch your breath. Thriller pacing. But also an excellent introspection about “monsters” — political, human, evolutionary and even innocent ones. Preble Jefferson was an ordinary man born with an extraordinary gift. One he used shallowly until a split second of annoyance leads to a chase that may threaten all of humanity as we know it and perhaps change it to something quite new. The book does not wrap up the goodness or monsterness of this possible evolution. That is yet to be determined. But first contact does not go great. With meanderings into history, science, politics and the blind love of parenting among other themes — there is plenty to contemplate between epic chases. A smart thriller to savor.

And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Satisfying
Revisado: 05-08-24
I’ve enjoyed all these books so far. They aren’t perfect but the world building was great and the characters individual enough. Especially Nesta from this book. The sisterhood she forms is the book’s highlight. Maas also excels in the action sequences. Really well done. Hope there is one more book as we have one sister’s story to go. And really hoping that one diverges from the hokey ‘mating’ notion. Here is hoping for free will.

Historia
In American Whitelash, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and best-selling author Wesley Lowery charts the return of this blood-stained trend, showing how the forces of white power retaliated against Obama’s victory—and both profited from, and helped to propel, the rise of Donald Trump. Interweaving deep historical analysis with gripping firsthand reporting on both victims and perpetrators of violence, Lowery uncovers how this vicious cycle is carrying us into ever more perilous territory, how the federal government has failed to intervene, and how we still might find a route of escape.

Nice twists
Revisado: 02-06-24
I appreciated the twists and the writing was tight. But there was lot of nonsensical moves buy the main character. Some exceptionally questionable. Like letting the man she put in prison stay with her and hang with her son. Questionable move because even if she believed his innocence prison must have changed him. Many decisions like that that made no sense. Especially her pity F@&$ with him. Bad judgment. Narrator was excellent. And sold the slight ditzy quality of the MC.

Fantastic ending to this trilogy. Feels like the author left the best for last. Loved Jack and Alan. They burned, of course, but also grew so much over the course of the story. This installment also benefitted from a grander scope and scale and setting than the middle book. These characters have become all familiar in a lovely way as has the world building. Magic for all!

Better and better!
Revisado: 01-27-24
It’s rare to find a series that only improves but this is one if them. The continuity may suffer a bit from book 1 to book 4 yet the story and plotting are excellent so that’s waved away. I appreciate the way emotions are shown without the need for swear words. I’m fine reading them. Just appreciate the work it takes to make you realize you aren’t missing them. Joe is an interesting character who has grown and changed. Much is made about Ray Porter not reading Joe in an English accent. I’ve gotten used to it. And the performance is soooo good that a quibble like that is minuscule. Super high recommendation for these. Worth the credits but for now available for Audible Plus members in their library. Can’t wait on the next one.
