Historia
Nikki lives in cosmopolitan West London, where she tends bar at the local pub. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she's spent most of her 20-odd years distancing herself from the traditional Sikh community of her childhood, preferring a more independent (that is, Western) life. When her father's death leaves the family financially strapped, Nikki, a law school dropout, impulsively takes a job teaching a "creative writing" course at the community center in the beating heart of London's close-knit Punjabi community.

Multi faceted
Revisado: 12-18-18
Somehow combines a story about finding your way in the world and community, with erotica and a thriller/mystery without seeming overwhelming. The narration is absolutely amazing and adds more layers to all the characters and interactions. I couldn’t stop listening to this one.

Historia
Today’s optimistic farm-to-table food culture has a dark secret: The local food movement has failed to change how we eat. It has also offered a false promise for the future of food. In his visionary New York Times best-selling book, chef Dan Barber, recently showcased on Netflix’s Chef’s Table, offers a radical new way of thinking about food that will heal the land and taste good, too. Looking to the detrimental cooking of our past, and the misguided dining of our present, Barber points to a future “third plate”.

Chef breaks down food in America
Revisado: 06-30-18
If you’re interested in how we grow, serve and eat food in the US, this is the book for you. Dan Barber does a lovely job of really digging into all parts of how we get our food, looking around the world at crazy things like natural foie gras and fish farms and phytoplankton bread to bring back home. He does a very good job narrating, and I appreciate that it is in his own voice. That said, he is not quite up to the quality of most professional narrators and if that bugs you, you may not make it through this book. The description field notes is perfect because it is a little all over the place, investigating whatever he is into.

Starts slow
Revisado: 03-26-18
It takes a very long time to get to the real mystery here—maybe a couple of hours. It does wind up being worth it, there are enough strands and characters to make this interesting enough but it remains slower than other Alafair Burke mysteries I have had the pleasure of reading.

Historia
A bag of chips. That's all 16-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, Paul Galluzzo, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes Rashad's pleadings that he's stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes Rashad's resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes Rashad's every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered.

Necessary reading
Revisado: 01-07-16
This book addresses so many of the police brutality issues we are facing, through the eyes of teen boys ok opposite sides. The audio was really well done, both narrators were engaging as was the story itself. Not a lot of easy answers here.

Southern comfort
Revisado: 12-21-15
This pageant story set in Texas is not what you might expect, even if you knew it featured a self-described fat girl. Willow Dean is a complex character, and so are her friends and beaus. The narration sweeps you away with a little bit of the south in it, but not so much as to be overwhelming.

Light listen with heart
Revisado: 07-28-15
Sophie Kinsella delivers her signature clear, obviously British writing style featuring women with issues and humor. This time it's a teenager with anxiety and she's working through it. And yet, it manages to be light and fairly realistic. The narrator really brought this book to life with the different character voices.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Inspiring, and wonderful to hear it read by the author who has a pleasant clear voice. Captures my interest and held it for the full length of the book.
