fun little read
Revisado: 12-24-24
i have always loved ancient eygpt and read several historical fiction books by Elvira Woodruff as a kid so i was intrigued when this one came up on my 30+year old selfs suggestions but definitely didnt object. its a fun story and relatable to the core. a great read for kids who feel more ordinary than extrordinary and for adults who need a reminder of what childhood is like. the narrator seems to be a pro at this and switches through the voices effortlessly. my only issue is i will never know the truth about the hamster 🤣

A Great Childrens Historical Fic Story
Revisado: 12-21-24
Avis books were the ones that got me into historical fiction as a kid and even now in my 30s i love his books. So when this came across my recommended listens, I went for it
i was a bit worried about the narrator after reading the reviews, but honestly i think he was a great pick. the book is written in past tense and his jovial but young teen sounding voice to me was a perfect fit. He sounds like a young man excitedly telling his war story to a group of friends during a time when story telling was about the only form of entertainment their was. I was a bit bummed to see this was his only narration so far.
As for the story itself? i love it. Avi has a great way of putting tons of detail into the story with plenty of adventure while still not making the book too long to the kids he writes for. If you like war stories, this is a great one.

Historia
Avi’s swashbuckling tale of murder and mutiny on the high seas has a fascinating twist: the heroine is a 13-year-old girl. In 1832, Charlotte Doyle boards a ship bound for America and is caught in a battle between a mad captain and his ruthless crew. If you’re looking for an action-packed adventure story for girls, you’ll find it in The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.

i love the writing style
Revisado: 11-28-24
this has been my favorite book since i was a little girl and is probably where i developed my love for old sailing ships and stories. Even now at 33, its still my favorite and my go to for a bad day or a jolt of nostalgia. The writing style is perfect for all ages and anyone who loves a good historical fiction story or a tale of the high seas! Thank you Avi for giving me the hero i needed a kid, and for putting it on paper so i can keep her as a hero now
