Historia
Villains take center stage in this collection of 19 dark and magical stories. Listeners will be cheering for all the wrong heroes as some of the most fearsome, devious, and brutal antagonists perform savage deeds towards wicked ends. And why not? These characters are the champions of their own stories - evil is a matter of perspective. Contributors also include Mark Adler, Bradley P. Beaulieu, E.V. Morrigan, Peter Orullian, Matthew Ward, Kaaron Warren, Deborah A. Wolf, and Janny Wurts.

Worth repeated listening
Revisado: 05-11-23
it took me awhile to get into the story structure but once I overcame my initial misgivings about the value of the content I have found pretty much every story worth listening to more than once, for the entertainment value. Many of these stories are worth multiple listens. I definitely feel that I got my credit's worth!

Historia
The Cthulhu Mythos is one of the 20th century's most singularly recognizable literary creations. Initially created by H. P. Lovecraft and a group of his amorphous contemporaries (the so-called "Lovecraft Circle"), The Cthulhu Mythos story cycle has taken on a convoluted, cyclopean life of its own. Some of the most prodigious writers of the 20th century, and some of the most astounding writers of the 21st century have planted their seeds in this fertile soil. The Book of Cthulhu harvests the weirdest and most corpulent crop of these modern mythos tales.

Long time HPL reader, I bought this book as an attempt at a distraction from my day to day life. What I discovered has blown me away like I never suspected. These stories are as true to the mythos as any others I'd ever read, or even derivative works within the "universe". The difference, for me, is that several of these stories are of such high quality that I rank them among the best I've ever read and a few are 'insta-classic' with me. And so I believe that one thing that sets this compilation apart (out of many), is the level of professional effort brought to the writing and editing of this volume. Which is something I have frequently found absent with so many other works along the same skein. Here, within this audiobook, the authors rarely seemed compelled to force HPL's works or materials into the body of their stories. They pretty much came off as a natural evolution and expansion of the existing infrastructure. Or untold tales in some cases. So I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in HPL but also good storytelling and strong narrative.

Historia
Last year, Night Shade Books unleashed The Book of Cthulhu onto an unsuspecting world. Critically acclaimed as the ultimate Cthulhu anthology” and a must read’ for fans of Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos,” The Book of Cthulhu went where no collection of mythos tales had gone before: to the very edge of madness and beyond. For nearly a century, H. P. Lovecraft’s tales of malevolent Great Old Ones existing beyond the dimensions of this world, beyond the borders of sanity, have captured and held the imaginations of writers and aficionados of the dark, the macabre, the fantastic, and the horrible. Now, because you demanded more, anthologist Ross E. Lockhart has risked all to dive back into the Cthulhu canon, combing through mind-shattering manuscripts and moldering tomes to bring you The Book of Cthulhu 2, with even more tales of tentacles, terror, and madness.

I've listened to pretty much all these stories more than 100x over the 4yrs I've owned it. Never disappointed, never bored, if it was a textbook it would be in pieces. The 1st BoCh is also excellent

Historia
This is the way the world ends, for the last time. The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night. Essun - once Damaya, once Syenite, now avenger - has found shelter, but not her daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request. But if Essun does what he asks, it would seal the fate of the Stillness forever. Far away, her daughter Nassun is growing in power - and her choices will break the world.

Incredible

I was new to NKJ. After finishing the first book of the series I was amazed. I have been reading all kinds of fiction for the last 40yrs or so (elementary). From JRR to GRRM, to King, Brooks, CSL, Clarke, Azimov, Heinlein, (don't hear much about him anymore) and many, many others. These books involve some of the best world building I've encountered. Not to mention methodical pacing between story telling and fast paced action. And that is just the start. The depth of the story being told and the minute details therein really speaks to the talent of this author. Throw in the how the story relates to both current events (climate change, human attempts at adaptation), and "ancient histories" (fall of empire, one time advanced civilizations destroyed by catastrophe,) and I'm proud to say I am now a solid NKJ fan! I recommend this book for those that enjoy having their intellect stimulated.

Fan fiction homage
Revisado: 03-04-22
I found this book to be an unremarkable entry into the HPCL mythos world. Mostly variations on a theme, the author's work here seems to be a distinction without a difference. It seems he is striving to connect this work with the Mythos, but strays too far from what makes that Mythos so powerful. Most of the stories here are repetitive, some have questionable structure, and are overall Boring. That is something HP's extended universe should never be. Also, the narration suffers from a persistently wooden recitation. I wish I'd known better what I was getting into before I used a credit on this work. There are so many better works of all varieties readily available.

Historia
Jack Shade has a secret, and this hidden part of his past sends him on a journey through time and space and a great number of metaphysical doorways. From the cozy poker table in the 11th-floor apartment of the Hôtel de Rêve Noire to the ethereal Forest of Souls to the faded houses along the Gold River, Jack flows in and out of this world. Even when his own duplicate hires him to kill himself, Jack is mercury in motion. The Fissure King collects the four existing Jack Shades novellas and shows us Jack's final trick - one last story that finally reveals Jack's true nature.

Detail oriented world building

The book feels earnestly written and the vocal performance reflects that. This man is haunted by his mistakes and he's too flawed to realize his efforts to redeem himself only make the situation worse
