Loved This!
Revisado: 02-25-25
I’m not going to lie, T. Kingfisher has me in a chokehold, which comes as a shock because I didn’t think I would love this series so much, but here’s the thing: this series exemplifies quality writing and story telling. The characters are funny, charismatic, delightful and just real. The mysteries they have to solve…every adventure is such a treat. And the intimacy isn’t smut! Don’t get me wrong, I love smut but there’s nothing worst than smut that doesn’t drive a story forward. Anyway, I’m hooked! And you’ll be too once you dive in.

Sis, my good sis! You understood the assignment! The assignment was understood! In all my years of reading and listening to audio books, this is the first time that I paused to savor a book. I did not want it to end and am not sure I’ll survive while waiting for the next book. What a stellar performance and completely original story. I’m hooked!

No lie, I took 3 to 4 day breaks while listening because it was just too much. The angst had me in shambles. But overall, TOG is arguably SJM’s best work. The world, the characters, the writing, pace. Everything about this story is perfection. And completely original. I love it!

Historia
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

I have to give Ms. Roberts credit for her debut novel. Overall, the story was compelling but predictable. Nothing pivotal happened. Also, Kai’s narrator was quite dull. I was tempted to skip his chapters all together. I also didn’t care for any of the side characters, including Kitt.

Almost DNFd this One
Revisado: 04-18-24
Not going to lie, I almost didn’t finish this book because initially, it felt like a traditional STEM, contemporary romance hidden behind the paranormal romance banner, but then it picked up and wasn’t bad at all. This was just what I needed as a palate cleanser. The romance was top tier, so was the steam, and I’m invested in this world. I’m hoping for another book, for real. I’m dying to see Owen’s rise and Serena in her element.

This is how you write a sequel! This is how you write a series/duology, period. This is how you write a book. I had no idea where this book was headed but I’m not disappointed at all.

Historia
People aren’t as they seem. And history…I’m still attempting to reconcile the truth with what I was previously told. My new allies have an agenda, but I have one of my own. Though there’s overlap—we all agree Dante must die—what I desire more than anything is to return to Lore before he levels the kingdom to find me…or loses his humanity trying. I may favor crowns over coffins, but I refuse to live in a world where my mate only exists as a bird.

This Book Wasn’t Necessary
Revisado: 04-02-24
Before using my credit to purchase this last installment, a reviewer mentioned that the first three books should have been a duet and not a trilogy. I heartily agree. 15+ hours was not necessary to address what happened after Fallon’s capture. The chapters focused on her capture were borderline dull and dreary. Other than a few revelations and surprises that were not at all surprising, I was dying for her to be released so that I could be reunited with the other characters and the rest of the world. But I think what bothered me the most about this book was its depiction of Lorcan; that man was so one dimensional, it’s shameful. I would hope that a man has more traits than just being intimidating, possessive and impulsive. Yes impulsive! Fallon is no better, but I expected that from her because she’s naive. Lorcan rarely did anything that made sense to me. I also felt that Fallon’s draw to Lorcan was solely because of their mating bond. No amount of sex scenes will sway me. And sex scenes are not the only way to depict love and intimacy between two people in love. Finally, Dante was the most boring villain. I still don’t understand why he devolved into such a monster. Yes, I understand the power of greed. But his transformation is so strange, I couldn’t believe he was the same Dante from the first book. That said, his undoing/ending was so anticlimactic, I didn’t think it was real. I thought: perhaps it’s the wrong man; it must be. Overall, I recommend this book solely because the second book ends in a cliffhanger, but seriously, we already know the story’s outcome because of Bronwen’s prophecies, so it’s entirely up to you. But this didn’t do it for me.
