Historia
Part inspirational cancer-survival story, part memoir-as-laugh-riot, Fran Drescher's new book picks up where Enter Whining left off. After her marriage ended, her TV series was cancelled, and her beloved dog died, Fran started having symptoms no doctor could adequately explain. With her trademark humor, she tells of her tireless search for answers and the cancer diagnosis that she ultimately beat.

Cancer Schmancer a meal through the ears
Revisado: 04-24-25
Fran Drescher was the perfect narrator of her own, well-written story. She can weave a skein so fine, and she words her tales with choice, specificity, detail and beautiful economy.i felt informed AND entertained. Fran Drescher made me think; this book reminds me that there is the actress, and there is the person. I recommend it highly.

Historia
Life with Picasso, written with Carlton Lake, is about Picasso the artist and Picasso the man. We hear him talking about painting and sculpture, his life, his career, as well as other artists, both contemporaries and old masters. We glimpse Picasso in his many and volatile moods, dismissing his work, exultant over his work, entertaining his various superstitions, being an anxious father. But Life with Picasso is not only a portrait of a great artist; it is also a picture of a talented young woman of exacting intelligence at the outset of her own notable career.

meaty but a trifle unsatisfying
Revisado: 06-21-24
Yes, this confirmed what a jerk Picasso was to women and to men. This world puts up with too many talented jerks. The author grew during her time with Picasso, but I wish that I had more of a sense of who she became as an artist. I wish I came away with her reflecting on her own youthful indiscretion with him as being tantamount to those that Picasso encouraged from other young, fawning women. Gilot's guts were in her growth. Did she write another, like, My Life As Me?

A Vanderbilt Reading
Revisado: 05-18-24
One can read many biographies about the past, but nothing can beat the personal reportage of the narrator whose life is connected to the story. Cooper's performance is paced with measured intonation and an even switch between points of view when history's trajectory comes closer. Thanks to both writers for researching Alva's antipathy towards blacks, as well as for couching the lives of the Robber Barons with the surrounding circumstances of the American worker's struggle, albeit lightly. Very enjoyable.

I wish I had discovered this during the pandemic. Allam and Lumley weave adult history and hijinks like the masters of acting that they are.
