Great!
Revisado: 04-08-15
Great overview of the spiritual teachers Confucius, the Buddha, Jesus, and Mohammad. A competent comparative study by a powerful thinker and man of discerning spiritual depth. Very relevant to one's on personal life and practice. Although professional and well treated, his study on the 'Historical Jesus' appears to contain a little more personal baggage. He is honest about this though and about the history of controversy/diversity of scholarly opinion.

Wonderful lecture series. He's big-picture analysis of the relationships between all the dialogues is essential. Intellectually challenging and powerful spiritual exhortation, especially with his comments on the last two lectures.

Excellent Introduction to Ancient Mesopotamia
Revisado: 03-10-15
Other reviewers complained that the first few introductory lectures were too long or that the presentation was bland. I believe that this probably stems from a lack of appreciation of standard academic rigor. The Professor's careful explanation of 'how we know what we know' is an invaluable insight that most mainline textbooks or introductions seem to render peripheral or even ignore. This creates a false sense of epistemic confidence with something that is, admittedly, a rough reconstruction of the past. The reference to the looting of the Iraq museum makes this point that much more clear.

Historia
Even today, the influence of Ancient Rome is indelible, with Europe and the world owing this extraordinary empire a huge cultural debt in almost every important category of human endeavor, including art, architecture, engineering, language, literature, law, and religion. At the peak of its power, Rome's span was vast. In the regional, restless, and shifting history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands as a towering monument to scale and stability, unified in politics and law, stretching from the sands of Syria to the moors of Scotland. And it stood for almost 700 years. In this series of 48 spirited lectures, you'll see how a small village of shepherds and farmers rose to tower over the civilized world of its day and left a permanent mark on history. In telling Rome's riveting story, Professor Fagan draws on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including recent historical and archaeological scholarship, to introduce the fascinating tale of Rome's rise and decline, including the famous events and personalities that have become so familiar: . Horatius at the bridge . Hannibal crossing the Alps during Rome's life-or-death war with Carthage . Caesar assassinated before a statue of his archrival Pompey . The doomed lovers Antony and Cleopatra . The mad and venal emperors Nero and Caligula . The conversion of Constantine The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different-the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.

Great introduction to ancient historiography and the overarching 'plot' of Roman history. I wish that they included more information about daily life, but perhaps I will just explore the great course under that name.

I have not taken a comparative looks at the literature, but she seemed to have a mature mastery of the material. It would have been nice to have more 'deconstructive' arguments against common unhealthy practices.
