Historia
By age twenty-four, Letty Davenport has seen more action and uncovered more secrets than many law enforcement professionals. Now a recent Stanford grad with a master’s in economics, she’s restless and bored in a desk job for U.S. Senator Colles. Letty’s ready to quit, but her skills have impressed Colles, and he offers her a carrot: feet-on-the-ground investigative work, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security.

doesn't make sense much of the time
Revisado: 05-08-22
My husband and I had the same reaction: this is not the high quality writing we have come to expect from John Sanford. In fact, it was so bad I won't bother reading any more of this series. the main characters were somewhat interesting but stone cold killers. The main antagonist was easier to like feeling remorse for deaths she causes.
The reader emphasized the wrong word in so many sentences, that he actually confused us several times. He needs some serious help with his Spanish pronunciation.

Historia
Late on a spring night in 1920, five boys cross the Yorkshire dales to the ruins of Fountains Abbey, intent on raising the Devil. Instead, they stumble over the Devil himself, sitting there watching them. Terrified, they run for their lives, leaving behind a book on alchemy stolen from their schoolmaster. The next morning, a body is discovered in the cloisters of the abbey--a man swathed in a hooded cloak and wearing a gas mask.

needed a good edit
Revisado: 11-05-21
I can't believe I listened to the whole thing. The plot was interminable, with an abundance of red herrings, and most of the characters were so tied up in emotional knots that very few were appealing and not particurlarly realistic. The ending was anticlimactic despite the vintage chase scene. The motive for two murders and several arsons was not credible. This was the first book I have read by this author and it will be the last.
The reader was pretty good with voices and phrasing.

Hailed as "the great nature writer of this generation" (Wall Street Journal), Robert Macfarlane is the celebrated author of books about the intersections of the human and the natural realms. In Underland, he delivers his masterpiece: an epic exploration of the Earth's underworlds as they exist in myth, literature, memory, and the land itself.

horrible narration
Revisado: 06-22-21
I could not listen to this book. The narrator reads as if he has no comprehension of the words. He pauses in inappropriate places and runs things together when he should be pausing. Emotion is nonexistant. I think Alexa or Siri could have done a better job. I feel conpletely cheated since I cannot return this awful book. Actually, the book itself might be good. I couldn't stand listening and therefore did not find out.

Great plot with many twists. Rebus may be retired but is still a great detective. Two related plots are woven together with all the detectives we fans have grown to love. Includes the infamous Big Ger too. A real treat.

crazy annoying music
Revisado: 03-22-20
I thought the plot was exceptional but very tragic. I was listening to it in the car on a long trip and had to take long breaks from the creepy killer and the sadness. I had a very difficult time adjusting the volune loud enough to hear the narrator. He drops his voice so low at the end of sentences that often all I could hear were consonants . I prefer the female narrator of the previous book in the series. And oh, the music !! loud, unrelated to the tone of the book, intrusive and just generally awful. It served no purpose whatsoever.

sad but good plot
Revisado: 02-23-20
I did not react well to the narrator. I felt that he often emphasized the wrong words in a sentence and paused randomly. I played the recording at 1.25 speed and that helped. He was good with dialog and with different voices, but in the straight narrative parts he didn't seem to pay attention to the content.

loved it
Revisado: 03-13-19
I love the author's witty style and her extraordinary command of English and other languages. Her plot twists are unpredictable . Her characters are varied and speak in different voices, a skill which many writers seem to lack. I wish she'd written a dozen more Jackson Brody novels.

Historia
Virgil knows the town of Trippton, Minnesota, a little too well. A few years back, he investigated the corrupt - and, as it turned out, homicidal - local school board, and now the town's back in view with more alarming news: A woman's been found dead, frozen in a block of ice. There's a possibility that it might be connected to a high school class of 20 years ago that has a midwinter reunion coming up, and so, wrapping his coat a little tighter, Virgil begins to dig into 20 years' worth of traumas, feuds, and bad blood.
