Historia
In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway, brutalized, and held for ransom. He is returned to his wife and kids less than a week later, only slightly the worse, and the family moves on with their lives, resuming their prized places in the saga of the American dream, comforted in the realization that though their money may have been what endangered them, it is also what assured them their safety.

What did I like? Not much. Nothing new unde the sun. Main character is so, so dreadful. It’s like a mountain of crap left on top of the table for you to clean / deal with. I don’t want to deal with this horrid mess. Why would I ? Nothing to learn, nothing to enjoy, nothing to look forward to. So, so, so disappointed. I loved her first book.

Not his best effort
Revisado: 12-30-24
I have followed W Boyd for a while now and lately he seems to be writing the same book. The story’s initial premise is interesting, but the story falls flat and rather old fashioned at times, re: seduction, etc. With regret, I do not recommend this book.

Historia
In the seaside town of Kinlough, on Ireland’s west coast, three old friends are thrown together for the first time in years. They—Helen, Joe, and Mush—were part of an original group of six inseparable teenagers in the summer of 2003, with motherless, reckless Kala Lanann as their group’s white-hot center. Soon after that summer’s peak, Kala disappeared without a trace. Now it’s fifteen years later.

Compelling mystery, beautifully written
Revisado: 05-09-24
Beautifully written coming-of-age / mystery saga of small-town Ireland. Sits in a particular genre, and, as such, it is a 5 star in its class. Sing-song rendering by each of the narrators. Very enjoyable. This writer *by far* surpasses Sally Rooney.

Historia
Twenty years after leaving London, Nina Stibbe is back in town with her dog, Peggy. Together they take up lodging in the house of writer Deborah (Debby) Moggach in Camden for 'a year-long sabbatical'. It’s a break from married life back in Cornwall, or even perhaps a fresh start altogether. Nina is not quite sure yet. Debby does not have many demands – only to water the garden, watch for toads, and defrost the odd pie – so Nina is free to explore the city she once called home.

Déjà-vu and déjà-lu (average or lower)
Revisado: 01-10-24
This book was recommended by Maria Semple. I can't fathom why. This is a run-of-the-mill story, with run-of-the-mill writing. Funny, this is not. Intelligent this is not. Moving? Not really. Overall mediocre. C+

This is my third listen of this book. The combination of Stibbe’s writing and Helen Baxendale’s reading makes for a very enjoyable company. Soothing in a time of crisis. Excellent.

More of the same
Revisado: 07-23-23
Same as first book. I listened to them back to back because I really liked _The Idiot_. _Either/Or brought nothing new. Same intelligent moments of reflection and quirkiness, but tiresome in the second half. A different cast of characters, but following the same narrative trajectory & character arc for the protagonist who is painfully stuck in yet another disappointing love fixation.

Historia
A portrait of the artist as a young woman. A novel about not just discovering but inventing oneself. The year is 1995, and email is new. Selin, the daughter of Turkish immigrants, arrives for her freshman year at Harvard. She signs up for classes in subjects she has never heard of, befriends her charismatic and worldly Serbian classmate, Svetlana, and, almost by accident, begins corresponding with Ivan, an older mathematics student from Hungary.

Beautiful book, engaging, smart, etc., but a bit saggy when it comes to the Hungarian adventure; otherwise a pleasure to read. Young people with compelling inner lives, in search of meaning. What is not to like?
