I started reading the physical copy a while ago after hearing the author on a podcast. And then a few weeks ago remembered audio is where it’s at for me these days. Now I need to go mark up my hard copy since there is so much I don’t want to forget and want to implement in the way I lead. It won’t just benefit me as a leader at church. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in a leadership position- even if you find yourself just wanting to be a thought or culture leader.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I always love when authors record the audio for their books, and I think her voice made this book much richer. It’s her story—childhood to adulthood, the influences of her family history and neighborhood, who she was in her career, marriage, motherhood, first-ladyhood.
A while back I watched the John Adams mini-series on prime, and it made me want to get to know our country’s historical leaders. All it took was 2 pages of dry biography reading to give up on that. But this book fed the desire. While there was so much more to it than her play-by-play of their public life, I found it enlightening to hear her anecdotes contrasted with the headlines/stories I often times saw shared on Facebook during the Obamas’ time in the White House.
I liked how she concluded the book, “For every door that’s been opened to me I’ve tried to open my door to others. And here is what I have to say finally: let’s invite one another in. Maybe we can begin to fear less. To make fewer wrong assumptions... There is power in allowing yourself to be known and heard, in owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice. And there’s grace in being willing to know and hear others...”

For those with a heart for hospitality

If you love food, gathering with people, and want to develop more of a heart for hospitality, I highly recommend this one! She took a deep dive into food references in the Bible, spending time with fishermen in Israel, a fig farmer, olive groves, salt mines, etc. and looking at the bigger context and meaning behind the verses that reference food.
Some favorite quotes (there were more, but I listened to a lot of this one while driving):
—“When we gather to eat, God wants to nourish more than our bodies. He wants to nourish our souls with transcendent joy and supernatural community and Divine presence. When we feed our physical appetites in community we open our hearts for God to feed something deeper as well.” —“Bread welcomes us into the community for which our souls were made.” —“Every table is a doorway, an entrance into a holy and sacred communion with God and those around us... recognize food as a gift from God instead of a commodity. Every mealtime is an opportunity to be on the lookout for Christ to reveal Himself in surprising ways.” —“May your table be set, not just with food but vulnerability and delight. May your mouth be filled not just with morsels of meat but reminders of God’s loving kindness. And may every meal at which you find yourself be a foretaste of the feast to come.”

I’ve tried to read/listen to her other books in the past, but don’t really love her writing style and gave up (perhaps it's the English major in me?). But we’re planning on reading this as a staff at some point, so I was committed and thought a head start might be good. Being committed made a big difference. I still feel the same about her style but LOVED and was greatly impacted by all of her content. I only managed to take a few notes as I listened, so I look forward to going back through the hard copy for work. If you’re in a leadership position, key player on a team, or want to grow a healthier team environment- I highly recommend this.

So Motivating

I’ve followed Jon for a long time, and finally decided to read/listen to this one after my brother mentioned being motivated by it. The practicality of this book blew me away. For goals I’m actually succeeding with, he explained why I’m seeing success. And for all the other goals/ideas/dreams I’m not pursuing, I feel like he’s given me necessary steps to go forward with.

Specific points I really appreciated: I wouldn’t have described myself as a perfectionist before, probably because I don’t usually start the things I can’t predict the success of—if sheer determination can get me there? I go for it. If determination might not be enough? I’m such a perfectionist who can’t start.

—I am motivated my victory, not fear, so I need to build more celebration in throughout big goals.

—Data tells us the truth. Case in point: today on my run, I felt sooo exhausted, was sure my pace was extra slow, and let myself walk more than I wanted to. I got home and checked my run tracker, and I had run my fastest mile ever, my fastest 5K and my fastest 2 miles. My feelings told me I was slow. My data told me otherwise. I need to keep more data so my feelings won’t be what control my measurements of success.

—He told a story from a book where a man was building a boat and he kept getting near completion and would take it apart and redo it over and over again. It turns out he was afraid of the ocean, so the idea of finishing his boat was scary. I do that to myself so often—I have a dream, something I want to do, and I am confident in the need for it. But I’m afraid that when I finish it, others won’t see the worth/value in it. So I don’t ever finish.

I kept thinking of people who I know would benefit from this book.

I HIGHLY recommend it. And now I’m going to go keep building my “boat” that I haven’t touched for 2 months for fear of the ocean.
