More Tentacle Fun!
Revisado: 08-17-23
This will not be for everyone but if you loved the first one, you will love this too. If you like Sci-fi Romance with aliens and tentacle smexy times with a real plot and lots of humor then this series is for you. But don’t start with this one, start with the first.
My only issue and I’m hesitant to call it that, is River’s exuberance. I love his character and he’s very funny but there are times where it’s just inappropriate and his not being able to reign it in during certain situations or venues sometimes makes him come off more as immature rather than sassy.
I love the Tentacular Tales book within a book and hope for that cheesy serial novella one day.
The Narrator is great and handles the multiple characters well.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Fabulous Story, Narration could be better
Revisado: 07-07-23
Is this perfectly written story? No, but it caught me and I got invested. I’m hooked and will be on the ride for the rest of the books. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are greenlighted for film before the final book is released.
I read a lot. A lot. And I loved this story. I needed a new epic fantasy to get lost in, and this was it. The heroine is physically weak but one of the strongest characters I’ve read in a while. Which is refreshing since female characters tend to become simpering and stereotypical. There is a love triangle and I feel like the reader gets to know the guys and their differences easily.
So the problem I have here is that I want to share this. BUT, the few scenes of steam are graphic. So how do I share this with my teenagers who would love the story? How do I share this with my SIL who loves fantasy but is a little prudish. The spice doesn’t bother me but it limits, in my opinion, the audience of this book. I’m sure there are parents buying this for preteens because it’s the next big thing, but haven’t prescreened the book. If you are considering doing this, please check out the book beforehand to make sure that you are comfortable with the steam level. I almost wish there was a somewhat censored version. And I wouldn’t normally say that but only am because of the popularity of the book. It would be like as if Twilight had extremely graphic sexual scenes. It would have been difficult to support sharing that series with the preteen or teen audience if that had been the case.
As for the narration?
Teddy Hamilton: fantastic as always. His narration is always consistent and quality. I don’t always like his female characters but they aren’t too bad. I really hope we get more from his characters POV in the next book.
Rebecca Soler: While I didn’t hear the ‘cold’ it seemed like there was a lot of other editing issues and there would be random lines that sounded like they were inserted after initial production and they were jarring. Her voices for different characters were inconsistent. There were times where Violet sounded like one of the male characters. There are other exclamations or ‘screams’ that sounded silly and poorly narrated, both with Violet but especially with the male characters. Her characterization of Tairn was off key. Overall I would say that I wouldn’t look for other books narrated by her and I hope that she does not narrate other books in the series.

Nothing brings two men—or one man and an ancient god—together like revenge. Private investigator Sloane sacrificed his career in law enforcement in pursuit of his parents’ murderer. Like them, he is a follower of long-forgotten gods, practicing their magic and offering them his prayers…not that he’s ever gotten a response.

Creative world building…with tentacles
Revisado: 03-25-23
This book series will not be for everyone. You do have to be open minded to a different world with elements of magic and the supernatural, as well as like snarky banter, a little silliness and be ok with insta love/lust type stories. And tentacles. Don’t forget the tentacles. This one is very similar to Chloe Archer’s It’s Not Unusual, but instead of aliens, we have gods. So about those gods-I’ve seen another review of the book mention the issue of consent. Consent IS important, don’t get me wrong, but anything I’ve read or learned about the gods of old pretty much characterizes them as entitled and very used to getting what they want when they want it. So Azaethoth completely gives this vibe, and since Sloane worships these very gods, I don’t think he expects them to be any different and accepts this nature.
I admit I haven’t yet finished reading this series of books. I came to start reading K.L. Hiers from her Cold Hard Cash series and was intrigued by her other genres of books. Because of the amount of world building and then jumping right into the story on this one, I was a bit overwhelmed and didn’t continue through the series immediately. Going back and listening to this as an audiobook has actually helped me enjoy the story even more and now I’m going to reread the next books that I’ve already read and then complete the series sometime soon. I might wait for more audiobooks.
The narrator on this wasn’t my favorite but they did a good job overall.

More fun than reading it yourself
Revisado: 02-28-23
When I first read this book, I knew that I would be looking for it in Audible. This is because the characters are unusual and lively, especially River and I knew that it would be an entertaining listen . I really have liked the series and enjoy the story so far but this book does kind of end in a semi cliffhanger. if you invest in this, you’re gonna want to go onto the book two. River though, is a very lively fun character, but there are times that some of the writing is too over the top for me, especially sometimes it’s hard to tell if River can actually be serious for more than two seconds. But the tentacle love story with an actual plot and smexy times is fun to read.
As for the narrator, he does a great job, but I really think that chapter 1 should be rerecorded. When I first listened to the first chapter, I was a little disappointed that he didn’t quite have the characters nailed but then I continued to listen, and he definitely gets his groove starting in chapter 2, so if you were just sampling this , make sure that you listen a little farther in to get a full feel for the book.

As Sweet As Cupcake Frosting
Revisado: 01-10-23
As with other titles from Charlie Novak this one is a part of a world with great characters and it’s very sweet with zero angst. Noah and Spencer fit together very well. This is definitely part of a universe of characters so it helps if you read book one first so that you kind of have an idea of what was going on with the group of friends. This is almost always the case with Novak’s books. This is a lighthearted entertaining listen. The only issue that I had was mentioned another review that Calley’s narration doesn’t really differentiate too much between their voices so it is easy to get lost between the characters, and if you’ve listen to other books by Charlie Novak that are narrated by Dan Calley listening to too many of these in a row can just seem very monotonous due to the narration. Recommended though for a sweet (pun intended) no angst read

Revisado: 06-15-22
I was excited to finally be able to listen to this one. I love the storyline and the steam level is HOT!. Boss Cold and Jimmy are perfect for each other!
This is a first time listen to this narrator and I have to say I was really impressed. I love his voice overall and the characters each had their own 'voice' to them. The women's parts weren't annoying (which sometimes happens with a male narrator). There was also very good attention to details like when a character had to clear their throat, or spoke in a whisper or while crying. There was even a little bit of singing which was very good. There was even a moment where there was speaking over a police radio, and that was even done with the tinny voice you would expect.
Overall, a great performance and enjoyable read.

Fantastic Series
Revisado: 06-08-22
I love this series and it will be an auto buy for me each time a book comes out. Unfortunately with this one, this is the one book in the series that felt rushed and maybe just a little…incomplete . I still really like it and obviously still purchased it and rated it high. Headcase follows Asa, one of the twins in the family, and it’s the precursor to Avi’s story which is the next one up, and probably the more anticipated of the two due to the teasing about the relationship between Avi and Felix. So Headcase comes off as a rushed, unfinished story because the author doesn’t want to give away everything about the twins before you’ve had a chance to read both. It dabbles with primal play as the kink and while that is hot, it kinda gets away from that and the ‘primalness’ that you would expect Asa to have, turning it more into a possessiveness that all the boys tend to have for their partners. The overal story arc is good but having listened to this after already read the book, I think the narration actually highlighted some of the timeline inconsistencies and continuation errors. Which is another reason this book felt rushed to print. Some of this should have been caught or more refined by an editor.
The narration as always is fantastic. Some other readers have balked at these books being written in 3rd person POV but I think with all the characters due to the sheer size of the family, it just works. And the narration captures the nuances between characters beautifully. And because it’s the same narrator between books, each character sounds the same between books, even when they go from primary to secondary characters, and this narrator gives each character their own voice. I don’t start a new book in the series thinking that this is the voice of a character from a previous book. Amazing job. Great choice.

Not as light as others by this author
Revisado: 05-17-22
This is one of my favorites from this author. It’s not really dark, but from Charlie Novak, if you’re a fan, it’s going to be a bit more emotional and angst ridden than you are used to from her.
Aaron and Josh have a history and a connection that is unquestionable. When they find each other again it’s not to just pick back up where they left off. They may not even be able to tolerate each other enough to give it a go. But underneath it all, the spark is still there and just give it a little blow and their heat ignites.
As much as I love this book in the series and was excited about it being available in audio, and I do really like Dan Calley and think he does a great job, I do have a small issue with a lot of Novak’s recent audio releases all being done by the same narrator. His voices all tend to sound the same, so when I’m listening to different books of hers, from the same series or different ones, the characters are sounding like the same person oftentimes.
Otherwise a great listen.

Always Eli
Revisado: 04-08-22
I loved this one just like I knew I would. I love the world that this author has built and all the characters within. Through the interconnected series we have seen different types of unusual pairings and this one is no different. I wouldn’t have thought that Eli and Tristan wouldn’t have worked but they did. Low angst, sweet and sexy, and fun as well.
I loved Dan Calleys narration of the last Charlie Novak Audio I listened to, which was Strawberry Kisses, and this was no different, but I see that she is using him for more upcoming books and I’m a little worried that a lot of the characters are going to end up sounding the same, though he does have a pleasing cadence to his voice and does the female voices well.
In any case, another recommended listen.
