Historia
Paris, 1774. With Sophie Twisden’s grandmother laid up with an illness, causing them to withdraw from the Paris social scene, the pompous Sheldon Cholmsley appoints himself as Sophie’s “protector.” Protector? Ha! More like tormentor. So when her new friend Basile Gervain offers her the protection of his name and promises he will not allow harm to come to her reputation when she breaks their sham betrothal and returns to London, she has little hesitation in accepting.

I liked the stark contrast between the Marquis and Sheldon and the natural ease between the Marquis and Sophie.
The side plots were also well done

I quite enjoyed this. The narrator drew me in very quickly. I truly felt the despair and desperate circumstances of both the Workhouse and the conditions on the street.

With a knife, a faithful stallion, and the survival lessons his father taught him, Hardy must face the challenges of the open prairie as they head west in search of help. Using ingenuity and common sense, Hardy builds shelters, forages for food, and learns to care for Betty Sue. But their journey through this hostile wilderness is being tracked by even more hostile men.

Simply marvellous

Simply marvellous tale.
I read this story when I was quite young and it appealed to me tremendously then, perhaps because of the two children involved. I was thrilled to see the audio version available and I lapped it up like a sumptuous desert. Perfect length, excellent sequence of action, simply wonderful narration that brought the characters to life in a fresh and unforgettable way. Wow wow wow.
For me the only thing I would have changed was to have Hardy pray to God in the midst of some of his greatest challenges. I believe it would have been most appropriate since the story indicates that his father had brought a bible with him and was in the habit of reading to him. Other than that, an outstanding read.

I have listened to many audiobooks and while the story itself was good, what clinched the deal for me was the versatility of the narrator as well as his suberb translation from the wriiten text to the audio. It was quite believable that there was a full cast of players instead of just one very talented reader.
