Funny show, not the best editing

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-24-09

This show was originally produced for Chicago only, and was later repackaged for this version that was aired nationally. It tells the story of The Wiener's Circle, a hot dog joint in Chicago with a lot of interesting characters and behavior from both the staff and the customers. The rest of the stories may not be as strong or interesting to some people. There's a very "Chicago-only" feel to this program, which I tended to enjoy.

Great narrator and great book, rare indeed

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Charlton Griffin is one of the greater narrators you will find on audible. His vocal range is amazing, and he is pleasant to listen to.

It helps that he has great stories to read to the listener. Contemporary writers do not have the wit, skill, patience, and talent of Maugham. Think of Chekhov with an English sensibility. I also enjoy the colonial settings of most of his stories. Not to be missed if you dislike genre fiction as much as I do and enjoy actual literature.

So-so narrator, meandering social commentary

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-08-05

This expose on the meat-packing and fast food industries often digresses and becomes too large in scope, which renders the work meandering at times. The message of the text is not alarmist and certainly not apologetic towards the meat-packing and fast food industries. For the most part, Schlosser attacks with facts, but his use of anecdote is somewhat cloying. I recommend the book, because most people simply have no clue how most of the food they consume is processed, and this is a good start. You can take or leave Schlosser's agenda, but you cannot deny the plethora of industry facts and research he has done.

I do not care for the narrator. His tone is too smug for my tastes. At the same time, the text book (as opposed to the audio book) was not as easy to digest.

About as good as a history of natural science gets

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-08-05

Bill Bryson's narrative style is both charming and erudite. He is never condescending, but quite the opposite: The wonderful prologue draws the listener into the book immediately and necessitates the listener's involvement in the next few hours. Bryson should be considered one of the better contemporary popularizers of science. His delightful wit entertains while the facts of natural science's history inform.

Both the abridged and the unabridged versions are great and well-narrated. (I must suggest the unabridged version on principle.)

Good narrator, great book

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-08-05

As an audio book, this unabridged recording of 1984 will please most listeners. The narrator clearly understands the tone and characters of the novel, which you do not always get with classic books turned into audio books. My only complaint concerns the quality of the recording, which is somewhat unrefined. I found that I had to turn the volume up on occasion.
