the first two books were much more interesting in my opinion. this one got too bogged down in the magic and needed more relatable character development. one of the pov characters was really hard to pay attention to - they were so alien that i just wasn't really on board for the journey. this series over all was very interesting to me and had some really cool ideas. the allegorical stuff particularly in the second book were well done and insightful. i just wish this last book would have gone through a few more rounds of edits

just pretend this one is fan fiction and skip it. the parts that weren't repetitive and boring were untrue to the character progression of the characters we have come to love. a very disappointing conclusion

if you are interested in mneumonic techniques, see Harry Lorayne's the memory book or, his 'How to improve your memory' if you want a short audiobook. Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua foer was fun if you want a narrative about memory competitions along with some instructions.

with regards to false memories and many other mental biases and errors covered in behavioral economics 'thinking fast and slow' by Daniel kahneman is required reading if you haven't read it yet. there are many fantastic books on that topic but that one is a real treasure. it is like a manual for your brain's foibles.

all that said, if you are looking for something quick and concise this Great course is pretty great! he did cover a bunch of stuff about the basics of how memory works that I can't think of a better source for that I've read (one probably exists though :) And I hadn't heard of the Ebbinghaus forgetting function or its history, so that was a great takeaway from this course for me and made it worth buying.

This is a super fun big broadcast! sound editing was terrific and there performers were all great! Kate McKinnon is so impressive and it was cool to hear from her sister who apparently is also quite talented. I'd love to hear more like this. they seemed to be having a lot of fun making it

I really loved Virgil Wander which inspired me to read this one by the same author. Was very disappointed.

Taleb's snobbery and condescension @ all time high

For someone who rails against critics breaking his principle of charity in not using straw man arguments against his main points, he sure does it himself an awful lot. For example, he uses Richard Thaler's self deprecating story about enjoying a tie his wife bought him when he wouldn't have bought it himself as proof of what an idiot Thaler is. Thaler feels this mental accounting is irrational and Taleb does not. I'm inclined to lean toward what I take to be Taleb's argument that the term 'irrational' is overplayed and does not really describe what is happening in a lot of the behavioral economics studies but to just dismiss the whole field as bunk goes much too far. That is where his ideas about heuristics that he uses to criticize Richard Dawkins come from after all. I bet Dawkins would even concede the point that an outfielder is using heuristics rather than subconsciously doing differential equations to anticipate where to go as he originally wrote decades ago.

Taleb makes some good points but he always overplays his hand and portrays himself and a very small handful of his heroes who 'have skin in the game' as the only people in the world who have contributed anything worthwhile.

Some of the things I liked:
-His points about vocal minorites having large impact on public policy or commerce e.g., kosher foods, non-gmo foods, smoking in restaurants.
-Don't tell me what you think, tell me what's in your portfolio. All that really matters is our actions- not our opinions.

I would give this another star but I'm so turned off by his self aggrandizement and unwarranted dismissal of every scientist, school teacher, public servant, and 9-5 employee that I can't do it.

The content was good. I plan to introduce artificially tight deadlines into my own schedule and use some of the methods Newport suggested to eliminate persistent distractions so that I can focus on deep work programming. The reader Jeff Bottoms was okay but he consistently mispronounced Richard Feinman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's names. They came up a good bit and it was distracting every time. I would have hoped a professional audiobook reader would have done a little research if he wasn't sure how to pronounce these prominent scientists names.

This story is a masterpiece. It is moving and relevant and captures so much of what is going on at the intersection of American black communities, white communities, and the police. And it does this in the form of a captivating narrative. I recommend anyone and everyone read it. Or listen to it because Bahni Turpin gives an amazing performance in the audiobook. I hope and expect that kids will be reading this in high school from now on. Thank you Angie Thomas for writing this wonderful story.
