Historia
In the fall of 1918, 13-year-old German immigrant Pia Lange longs to be far from Philadelphia's overcrowded streets and slums, and from the anti-German sentiment that compelled her father to enlist in the US Army, hoping to prove his loyalty. But an even more urgent threat has arrived. Spanish influenza is spreading through the city. Soon, dead and dying are everywhere. With no food at home, Pia must venture out in search of supplies, leaving her infant twin brothers alone....

Sweet, determined, resilient Pia
Revisado: 01-25-25
I’d like to start by saying that I am so grateful that this is not based on a true story. This book elicited so many emotions in me, sadness, anger, relief, solace. It was interesting to learn about the Spanish flu and see similarities with the Covid pandemic 100 years later. Pia was so resilient and determined. I am proud of her without knowing her. 4.5 stars.

Excellent
Revisado: 01-16-25
I loved this novel. It was so well-written and incredibly educational for the reader. Lisa clearly put significant research into creating her storyline and characters, but wrote it in a way to keep the reader engaged. I highly recommend.

Maybe I’m cynical
Revisado: 01-08-25
I haven’t listened to the previous Virgin River books, and I will try book 1 and see what I think, but I found myself annoyed with Angie and Patrick. This seems like a great listen for a young adult audience. Angie and Patrick just seemed immature. Like I said, maybe I’m cynical. I won’t write off Virgin River yet. The reviews for this book were overall great, so I expected to enjoy it more.

Feel-good, easy read
Revisado: 11-24-24
I have listened to all of Lily Chu’s books over the past month, and this storyline was my favorite. These aren’t groundbreaking novels, but well-written with a female protagonist (different characters in each book). The main characters are all Asian. I appreciate that there’s no graphic sex scenes. They always have happy endings. I found Lily Chu after I had finished an emotionally heavy book about the holocaust, and her books were light and just what I needed. I’m going to follow her, because I will listen to other books by her.

This Psych 312 assignment just might send me off the deep end. Determining whether love at first sight really exists with Robbie Moravian as my project partner of all people? He’s the sappiest man alive, so upbeat I could scream, and clearly rooting for happy endings at every turn. How does he not learn from experience considering our own meet-cute last semester almost got us expelled? But we both need to pass this course to graduate. So we’re interviewing five random couples about their meet-cutes and relationships and spending all this time together. Which is certainly...educational.

When 17-year-old Rune Kristiansen returns from his native Norway to the sleepy town of Blossom Grove, Georgia, where he befriended Poppy Litchfield as a child, he has just one thing on his mind: Why had the girl who was one half of his soul, who promised to wait faithfully for his return, cut him off without a word of explanation?

Not my favorite listen
Revisado: 02-29-24
I feel like this book could have been 5 hours shorter. It seemed to move in place at some points with unnecessary filler. I finished the story because I paid for it, but I sped it up bc I felt like I kept looking down and seeing that I had 2 hours left. I thought I was cynical about the story until I saw the other reviews. I really don’t care for Rune’s character. Maybe he is the way he is because of his culture, but if Poppy had lived I feel like he would have been super controlling for the rest of their relationship. He just had to get his way and made his disapproval very clear when he didn’t.
Maybe just me, but I’m honestly relieved that this book is over so that I can move on.

Historia
It's nearly Christmas, Julia Devine's favourite time of the year. She's just programmed a wonderful lead into the holidays at Sunny Street Cinema, which leaves her plenty of time to worry about going home to Cumbria for Christmas. Her mum and stepdad are fine, but the thought of spending another holiday with her awful stepsister Becca is enough to make a Scrooge out of anyone. When Becca calls to let her know about the dreamy pilot she's bringing to Christmas lunch, Julia finally snaps and does something very silly.

Revisado: 01-09-24
This is a cute, easy listen. Definitely a feel good story. There’s not a lot of depth to the characters and storyline since it’s shorter, but it is very well written.

Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. This is such a sweet story. There’s nothing earth shattering in it, but it’s just refreshing. I love Edinburgh and I could picture it while the story was being told. I recommend this book!

I’m kicking myself for passing up this book a few years ago. I couldn’t stop listening. It’s such a unique love story and I was so invested in the characters’ lives. Looking forward to devouring the next!
