Historia
Rome, 1943. With the fall of Italy's Fascist government and the Nazi regime occupying the streets of Rome, British ballerina Julia Bradbury is stranded and forced to take refuge at a hospital on Tiber Island. But when she learns of a deadly sickness sweeping through the quarantine wards--a fake disease known only as Syndrome K--she is drawn into one of the greatest cons in history. Alongside hospital staff, friars of the adjoining church, and two Allied medics, Julia risks everything to rescue Jewish Italians from the deadly clutches of the Holocaust.

Good read with suspense and twists & turns that were riveting
Revisado: 08-25-24
The narrator was over dramatic. Bourne’s character was somewhat of a caricature, he was portrayed like a “dog with a bone” who couldn’t let go of finding the person he sought and gave in to sexual circumstances quite readily. He did not seem like a man who was complex as a top notch spy would be

The story presented parallels to the current situation in the country
Revisado: 05-16-24
I enjoyed the story, and the suspense, The detailed description of the unfairness among Blacks and Whites, was a good reminder of how bad things can get. The political messages were a reminder that our democracy is fragile Did not enjoy the proselytizing among various characters, it was long and drawn out

Good story but exhausting to listen to
Revisado: 08-25-23
The story was unique in that it reflected today’s challenges with information hacking. Lots of twists and turns, however, it was exhausting to listen to, the main character was always in a state of distress and anxiety and the narrator sounded so dramatic all the time.
Also, could’ve avoided some situations that kept being repeated over and over

This is a beautiful story of survival in a magical setting amidst difficult times during the attack on Pearl Harbor. I listened to this book after returning from the island of Hawaii and resonated with the beauty of the island, the awesome volcanoes, the beautiful plants and flowers. Enjoyed it!

A master manipulator, he had many weapons at his command, but against him were ranged the whole of the English police, a brilliant and powerful lord, and the young Winston Churchill himself. These odds would have stopped any man in the world - except the man from St. Petersburg.

Gripping tale, had me on edge…
Revisado: 02-10-22
Great description of the how the wealthy live and the meaninglessness of some of their customs. Interesting insight into the suffragette movement and womens’ rights.
Some parts of the story seemed a little far fetched, but the epilogue implies that this might be a true story??
The narrator was good overall except for the women’s dialogue - not very credible.
Like all other Ken Follett novels, I enjoyed the history intermingled with the suspense thriller aspect. A very good read overall!!

Nearby, Captain Jim Agnihotri lays in Poona military hospital recovering from a skirmish on the wild Northern frontier, with little to read but newspapers. The case that catches Jim's attention is being called the crime of the century: Two women fell from the busy university’s clock tower in broad daylight. A good tale set in British India
Revisado: 09-14-21
Enjoyed the familiar places, foods and cultural details set in old British India.
The narrator was excellent mimicking the many voices and characters
There were some harsh, poignant and sad moments especially as related to the young children, but they end on a brighter note, for most part.
While the story was suspenseful, the romantic part was somewhat over the top. Could’ve done with more details of the places and historical details in the British Raj, and less with the romance

A story of healing and hope
Revisado: 04-30-21
Against a backdrop of the horrors of WWII and Nazi occupation is a story of love, beauty, and redemption. The beauty of the Tuscan landscape juxtaposed against the horrors of World War II, the story is well written, and gives the reader a sense of hope as well as a sense of beauty. The chapters on the symphony were informative and interesting. The suspense filled scenes left me wanting desperately for Ada to prevail against all odds. Thoroughly enjoyed the book !

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.
