At last! The man who would be King has been vetted
Revisado: 11-03-24
At last! Donald Trump has been vetted. It’s very solid journalistic reporting by two New York Times reporters. They vetted every piece of the incredible Trump saga of lies, two generations of tax cheats, and high crimes and misdemeanors. Shocking and revealing. Thank God I read this. Now we know the truth about the man who would be King. Thank you Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig for your years of hard work! It’s about time somebody made Donald Trump answer to the truth.

Historia
When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Historia
In Unfamiliar Fishes, Sarah Vowell argues that 1898 might be a year just as crucial to our nation's identity, a year when, in an orgy of imperialism, the United States annexed Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and invaded Cuba and then the Philippines, becoming a meddling, self-serving, militaristic international superpower practically overnight. Of all the countries the United States invaded or colonized in 1898, Vowell considers the story of the Americanization of Hawaii to be the most intriguing.

Insightful, laugh out loud funny!
Revisado: 03-02-24
Your book had me laughing out loud, tears streaming down my face, breathless with wonder. You made Hawaii, its history, and its people come to life. I live here in Hawaii. I went to the University of Hawaii and majored in Hawaiian history, Hawaiian culture, and the Hawaiian language. Your book was so deeply researched and so insightful that I learned a lot from it. The production value of your audiobook is truly wonderful, as is your epic mangling of the pronunciation of Hawaiian words and names (I get it, you’re letting us know that you’re a Ha’ole, not a Native Hawaiian, but it was often painful to hear and I really did wince, but I took it as part of your delightful humor). I was so sad when your book ended. This is without question, one of my favorite books ever. You really delivered. WOW!

Growing up, Jena Friedman didn’t care about being likable. And she never wanted to be a comedian, either. She wouldn’t discover her knack for the funny business until research for her college thesis led her to take an improv class in Chicago. That anthropology paper, written on race, class, and gender in the city’s comedy scene, was, in Jena’s own words, “just as funny as it sounds.” But it did lay the groundwork for a career that has seen her write and produce for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, the Late Show with David Letterman, and the Oscar-nominated Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Historia
The Hawaiian kingdom was tiny, and the big world was huge. The 19th century was the high water mark of Western imperialism, worldwide, and the great powers were planting their flags across the Pacific. Hawai'i was in their sights. By late in the century, two strong American currents were running: one east from the islands, one west from the continent. Sugar plantations had become Hawai'i's biggest moneymaker. And many of the biggest names in the business were of American blood - the sons of missionaries, devout capitalists.

WOW! Best history of Halloween
Revisado: 06-28-23
I have read dozens of history books of Hawaii. This is by far the most detailed and comprehensive. Gavin Daws can be a bit grumpy and negative and critical and cynical, but he is equally grumpy and negative and critical about all sides of any historic event. Very insightful, but his assessment of the Hawaiian kings and queens is
painful to listen to sometimes. I feel this book is very accurate and much deeper and more insightful and most of what is written about Hawaii, but at times, it is cruel and hard to listen to. while insightful, is unerringly mean spirited in his assessment of every event, and every person involved.

Historia
Understanding how brains produce consciousness is one of the great scientific challenges of our age. Some philosophers argue that consciousness is something "extra", beyond the physical workings of the brain. Others think that if we persist in our standard scientific methods, our questions about consciousness will eventually be answered. And some suggest that the mystery is so deep, it will never be solved.
